On Nordstrand, mudflat landscapes, birdwatching and local history come together with a range of ways to explore the area. Whether on foot, by bike or on an excursion, you can focus on different aspects when planning your trip—from paths along the dike to seasonal services from the harbor.
Wadden Sea, Trails and Birdwatching
Nordstrand is located in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walks follow the outer dike, pass through green fields or take coastal paths overlooking the mudflats. If you’d like to include wildlife watching in your plans, there’s a seasonal option: Arctic geese can be observed during migration and in winter.
Beltringharder Koog lies north of Nordstrand. There are four birdwatching hides there, as well as a nature trail at the Arlauschleuse. On Nordstrand, Vogelkoje offers guided visits, an information hut, an orchard, a butterfly area and a pond used by resting birds. The two locations offer different ways to enjoy birdwatching and time outdoors.
Mudflats, Halligen and the National Park House
Mudflat hikes from Nordstrand can lead to the Hallig of SĂĽdfall, the Hallig of Nordstrandischmoor and the area of Rungholt, with its cultural traces. Access to SĂĽdfall is subject to a special condition: the Hallig can only be visited as part of a guided tour, either on a guided hike or with the mudflat carriage drivers.
At the Nordstrand National Park House, a landscape model, an aquarium and other exhibitions bring the Wadden Sea and its wildlife to life. Activities also include beachcombing workshops, mudflat and night hikes, birdwatching tours, literary walks, island cycling tours and guided visits to salt marshes. This makes it possible to combine exhibitions and activities covering a range of nature and cultural topics. Check current dates in advance when planning tours.
Routes on Foot, by Bike and by Bus
The panoramic trail from Strucklahnungshörn to Norderhafen is accessible and has rest areas and information boards. The Art and Culture Route offers a different perspective: it is about 3.6 kilometers long and passes Nordstrand’s churches, the Nordstrander Töpferei pottery and the Teestuv. Its approximate length is a useful point of comparison if you’re considering this route alongside a longer bike ride.
Well-maintained cycle paths run along the dike and through green marshland. You can also reach the National Park House by bike via the cycle path along the road dike. The Nordstrand Harbor Tour is a themed cycling route of about 25 kilometers that connects five harbors. The two routes therefore differ considerably in their stated lengths: about 3.6 kilometers for the Art and Culture Route and around 25 kilometers for the Harbor Tour.
Bus route R140 runs from Husum station to Nordstrand Norderhafen. From there, it’s a five-minute walk to the National Park House. This connection is a useful guide for visiting the center; a cycle route to the National Park House runs along the road dike.
Local History, Crafts and Regional Cuisine
The Nordstrand Island Museum tells the story of local history, including storm surges and seafaring. Three churches, each with its own architectural and historical character, also shape the area’s cultural offerings. If you’d like to include crafts, Nordstrand has two pottery workshops: Nordstrander Töpferei and Süderhafen Töpferei make handmade ceramics from durable gray stoneware. Nordstrand traditions include Biike bonfires, ring riding and Rummelpottlaufing.
For a break, there are cafés, traditional North Frisian restaurants and smaller eateries serving regional specialties. The cultural route, museum and pottery workshops offer different stops from birdwatching and mudflat trails, so you can choose according to your interests without trying to fit everything into one outing.
Excursions from Strucklahnungshörn
The ferry from Strucklahnungshörn harbor goes to Pellworm. Seasonal excursions also run to Amrum, Sylt, Föhr and Heligoland, as well as to Halligen such as Hooge, Gröde and Nordstrandischmoor. The harbor can be reached from Husum by car or bus. Since excursions are seasonal, it’s a good idea to check the dates in advance.
The wider North Frisia travel region includes five islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, including Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also includes ten Halligen, a distinctive landscape feature of the national park. This broader regional context helps put the island and Hallig names into perspective; the specific excursions from Strucklahnungshörn are the ones listed above.
