Mildstedt is part of the Husum Bay holiday region. Husum and the river landscapes of the Eider, Treene and Sorge are nearby. Two specific themes shape the choice of destination: activities in the Mühlenau / Mildstedter Tannen nature experience area and the Guttempler Museum. In addition, the wider destination of North Frisia provides its own regional setting of coast, Wadden Sea, islands and Halligen.

Mildstedt: Natural Landscape and Museum

The Mühlenau / Mildstedter Tannen nature experience area offers hiking, walking and jogging in the Mühlenau Valley. These three activities offer different ways to spend time outdoors; what they have in common is their connection to this valley landscape. This makes it possible to experience the local natural surroundings through different forms of exercise, without any particular way of getting around having to take precedence.

The Guttempler Museum in Mildstedt is said to be the only museum of its kind outside Boston, USA. This comparison gives Mildstedt's cultural side an unusual accent alongside the activities in the Mühlenau Valley. The natural landscape and the museum thus stand side by side as two distinct local themes: being active in the landscape and a distinctive museum connection.

North Frisia: Coast, Islands and Halligen

The wider destination of North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum, among others. North Frisia also includes ten Halligen, which lie within the national park as a distinctive landscape formation. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature conservation area and is also part of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Coast, islands, Halligen and the Wadden Sea thus offer different ways of viewing the wider region.

Wildlife Watching and Guided Experiences

Visitors can observe a diverse range of birdlife at Hauke-Haien-Koog. Hallig Südfall offers a different landscape: the 50-hectare Hallig lies in Zone 1 of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and has a largely natural landscape. Südfall can only be visited as part of guided tours, either on guided walks or with the mudflat carriages.

The Schlüttsiel Information Centre offers a natural history exhibition and guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. Weather permitting, a guided walk along the sea dike follows. Excursion boats also depart from Schlüttsiel to the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as to the seal banks. The weather-dependent dike walk and the stated frequency of the guided tours are useful details for planning.

Cycling Routes and Regional Specialties

For a choice based on route length, two regional routes can be compared: the Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometres long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel. The Stollberg-Koog Tour covers 35 kilometres and starts in Reußenköge at the Amsinck House; it is therefore eight kilometres longer. The North Sea Cycle Route runs through North Frisia and is part of the “North Sea Cycle Route.” The international long-distance Grenzroute cycle route provides a way to reach North Frisia by bicycle.

Another cycling tour is the “Eiderstedt Countryside Tour.” It runs through the expansive marsh landscape of North Frisia and offers quiet roads, nature and a glimpse of rural life with cows and sheep. There is also a regional culinary connection: in northern North Frisia, Pharisäer is one of the classic specialties. This hot coffee with a shot of rum and a dollop of whipped cream adds a specific regional tradition to the landscape and cultural themes.
