From Lütjenholm, Denmark, the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts, and the islands and Halligen of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park are all easy-to-reach destinations for excursions. There are also nature spots and activities in the local area. When choosing where to stay, it helps to make a practical distinction: would you like to focus on the local landscape and trails, or also plan excursions further afield in the region? If a particular connection or travel time is important, check the details before setting out.
Nature and Trails in Lütjenholm
Nature spots around Lütjenholm include the 16-hectare Lütjenholm Heath Dunes Nature Reserve, Lütjenholm Süderheide and Lütjenholm Forest. The Soholmer Au is another nearby nature spot. When planning an excursion, you can use the nature reserve as your starting point or consider the heath, forest and river as additional landscape destinations.
A signposted local network of trails can be used for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. There are also opportunities for fishing and canoeing. This offers a choice of different activities: getting active on the trail network or planning other outings to suit your interests.
North Frisia as a Regional Setting
North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also includes ten Halligen, distinctive landscape formations within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and is part of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.
In North Frisia, the Schlüttsiel Information Centre has a natural history exhibition. Guided tours about the Wadden Sea and nature conservation take place there almost daily; in suitable weather, a guided walk along the sea dike follows. Excursion boats from Schlüttsiel travel to the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as to the seal banks. Hallig Südfall can only be visited as part of a guided tour, either on guided walks or with the mudflat carriage drivers. Check dates and departure times in advance if a tour or boat trip is central to your day's plans.
Cycling Routes, Birdlife and Culture in North Frisia
Cycling routes also vary in length: the Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometres long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel. The 35-kilometre Stollberg-Koog Tour begins in Reußenköge at the Amsinck House. The North Sea Cycle Route passes through North Frisia and is part of the “North Sea Cycle Route.” North Frisia can also be reached by bicycle via the international long-distance Grenzroute. The Hauke-Haien-Koog is a good place to observe a rich variety of birdlife.
North Frisia also offers a distinctive regional focus for culture lovers: of all the districts in Schleswig-Holstein, it has the highest density of museums and the greatest number of registered cultural monuments. A regional speciality of northern North Frisia is the Pharisäer—a hot coffee with a shot of rum and a topping of whipped cream.
