In Langenhorn, individual sights and landscapes of heath, forest and marshland meet a historic market square that is part of the protected cultural heritage. The wider travel destination of North Frisia broadens the view to coastal, island and Hallig themes.

Sights and Market Square

Langenhorn’s sights include the Friedrich-Paulsen Memorial, St. Lawrence Church and the Langenhorn smithy. The historic market square is also part of the protected cultural heritage. Its buildings consist mainly of single-storey brick houses with thatched or tiled roofs. Thus, individual named sights sit alongside a distinctive architectural feature: the historic square and its characteristic buildings.

Landscape and Coastal Region

Langenhorn’s landscape includes heath, forest and marshland, as well as extensive areas of forest and heath. Tidal flats and waterscapes along the North Sea are also nearby. The North Sea coast is approximately 10 km from Langenhorn; the actual distance depends on the destination and route.

Hamburger Hallig and Holmer Siel are nearby bathing destinations. The ports of SchlĂĽttsiel, DagebĂĽll, Nordstrand and Husum provide access to the North Frisian Islands and Halligen. The region therefore offers both bathing destinations and ports providing access to islands and Halligen.

Food and Drink Locally

Local options include several restaurants and inns, a bakery, a supermarket with a butcher’s counter, and a discount supermarket. As businesses and offerings may change, check current availability before your trip.

North Frisia as the Wider Context

The wider travel destination of North Frisia puts the broader coastal and landscape setting into perspective: the region has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also encompasses ten Halligen, which lie within this national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and is part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.

North Frisia also offers a distinct regional perspective for culture enthusiasts: among Schleswig-Holstein’s districts, it has the highest density of museums and the greatest number of listed cultural monuments. In northern North Frisia, Pharisäer—hot coffee with a shot of rum and a topping of whipped cream—is one of the classic regional specialities.

The Schlüttsiel Information Centre offers a natural history exhibition and guided tours about the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. In suitable weather, a guided walk along the sea dike follows. Visitors can observe a rich variety of birdlife at Hauke-Haien-Koog. Excursion boats depart from Schlüttsiel for the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as for the seal banks. Hallig Südfall may only be visited as part of guided tours, either on guided walks or with the Wadden Sea carriage drivers.

There are cycle routes of varying lengths in North Frisia: the Beltringharder Route is 27 km long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel; the Stollberg-Koog Tour covers 35 km and begins at the Amsinck-Haus in Reußenköge. The North Sea Cycle Route runs through North Frisia and is part of the “North Sea Cycle Route”. North Frisia can also be reached by bicycle via the international long-distance Grenzroute cycle route.
