The Immenstedt Forest and the Cheese Route give a stay in Immenstedt two distinct focal points: walks in the forest or a signposted 45-kilometre circular cycling route. The route passes through Immenstedt and includes the forest. When planning, it is therefore helpful to first decide whether you mainly want to get around on foot or cover a longer distance by bike.
Immenstedt Forest: walks in a continuous woodland area
Immenstedt Forest is a large, continuous woodland area characterised by various native broadleaf forest types. Small forest streams and wet woodland habitats are also part of it. A well-developed network of paths serves local recreation, including walking. If you are planning a forest walk, you can make the forest your main focus rather than using the cycling loop as your benchmark. Some paths may be affected by forestry work; bear this in mind when planning. In the forest, the paths and landscape take centre stage, while the Cheese Route sets out a longer cycling distance.
The Cheese Route: a signposted cycling loop
The Cheese Route is a signposted circular route covering 45 kilometres. It passes through Immenstedt and includes Immenstedt Forest. Country roads and farm tracks connect the ride with regional cheese stops and cheese products from farms. Unlike the forest path network, the route has a defined total distance and a specific theme for the cycling trip. Check the signposting and participating businesses before setting off. The 45 kilometres give you a concrete basis for planning your day; regional cycling routes also offer distances with other specified lengths.
North Frisia as a regional setting
As a broader travel destination, North Frisia offers its own coastal and Wadden Sea theme. North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. Sylt, Föhr and Amrum are among the five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park; North Frisia also includes ten Halligen, a distinctive type of landscape within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and part of the national park. For wildlife watching, consider Hauke-Haien-Koog, where you can observe a rich variety of birdlife.
The Schlüttsiel Information Centre has a natural history exhibition and offers guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost every day. In suitable weather, a tour on the sea dike follows. Excursion boats depart from Schlüttsiel for the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as the seal banks. If you are planning a tour or boat trip, check the dates and timetables in advance. These activities offer a different focus from a walk in Immenstedt Forest or the Cheese Route.
Regional cycling routes and other interests
Other cycling routes in North Frisia can also be compared by their specified lengths. The Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometres long and starts in Lüttmoorsiel. The Stollberg-Koog Tour measures 35 kilometres; its starting point is at Amsinck House in Reußenköge. Both are shorter than the 45-kilometre Cheese Route. The North Sea Cycle Route passes through North Frisia and is part of the “North Sea Cycle Route”. North Frisia can also be reached by bike via the international long-distance Grenzroute. Among Schleswig-Holstein’s districts, North Frisia also has the highest density of museums and the largest number of registered cultural monuments. A classic speciality of northern North Frisia is Pharisäer: hot coffee with a dash of rum and a topping of whipped cream.
Choose a focus for your accommodation search
The forest trails and the 45-kilometre cycling loop offer two different ways to plan your trip. If you would also like to include the coast, Wadden Sea, birdwatching or culture, consider North Frisia as a wider regional setting. For the Cheese Route, it is worth checking the signposting and participating businesses for your travel dates. This way, you can tailor your search and daily plans to the experiences that matter most to you.
