Experience Husum Harbour at both high and low tide; the National Park House Husum is right by the harbour. From there, an approximately 8 km hiking route leads to the landing stage in the SchobĂĽll district. It connects the harbour, meadows and birdlife, and offers a view of the North Sea without a dike. This gives you a specific route through the coastal landscape to choose from, alongside the museums. Husum is directly connected to the national park and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wadden Sea; the North Sea reaches right into the town.

Harbour, nature and the seasons

Every spring, more than four million crocuses transform the grounds of Husum Castle Park into a purple natural spectacle. This is a seasonal highlight in the townscape, while other nature-related activities extend beyond the town into the surrounding region. Birdwatching is possible year-round in North Frisia, along the coast and in the adjacent inland area. The Husum Bay area also has a well-developed network of cycle paths, with routes that are mostly flat.

If you’re interested in the North Sea, you can experience the harbour at different tides or plan a hike to Schobüll. The approximate route length of 8 km gives you a specific point of reference. Other excursion options from Husum include boat trips to seal banks and trips to catch crabs. Check dates and availability for these trips in advance.

Museums, literature and architecture

Husum’s museums cover a range of topics: whaling and fishing, shipbuilding and navigation, the submerged settlement of Rungholt, and the town’s literary connections with Theodor Storm. The Ostenfeld Farmhouse showcases rural everyday and working life through traditional interiors, tools and household objects. It is Germany’s oldest open-air museum. The farmhouse also has a garden with boxwood beds, herbs, ornamental plants and old apple trees.

The Theodor Storm Centre combines an archive and a museum in Theodor Storm’s last home in Husum. The Nordfriesland Museum Nissenhaus illustrates cultural developments and traditions along the North Sea coast. Alongside rural everyday life, you can explore literature and regional cultural history as distinct themes.

Architecture and local history can also be part of your visit. St. Mary’s Church is considered one of Schleswig-Holstein’s most important examples of Neoclassical architecture. Husum Castle houses a museum with a gallery in the attic. Information boards explain the stops along the Husum Cultural Trail. Guided town tours are offered year-round, including walking tours and night watchman tours.

Plan your stay and excursions

When planning, you can choose between focusing on the harbour and local history or adding nature and excursion activities. The hike to Schobüll covers approximately 8 km; museums, the Cultural Trail and town tours offer a different focus. If you’re planning to travel beyond Husum, you can also take the train connection into account: DB Regio RB64 runs from Husum via Tönning to Sankt Peter-Ording. Check the timetable for your travel dates.

Dining is also part of a stay by the harbour: you can enjoy shrimp rolls or Frisian cake there. This brings together the harbour, culture and nature as different ways to spend your days in Husum, without having to fit everything into a single itinerary.
