Horstedt lies at the transition between marsh and geest. Its rural character is reflected in a landscape shaped by agriculture, both in the village centre and the surrounding area. Historical land reorganisations transformed the former heathland into a small-scale hedgerow landscape that continues to shape the scenery. Inland dunes along the road towards Husum were afforested as part of the Nord programme. Horstedter Bek is one of the tributaries of the Arlau.
Landscape and Orientation
Horstedt is close to the neighbouring town of Husum; the North Sea is also easily reached from here. When choosing a place to stay, you can weigh up its rural character against its proximity to Husum and the region’s coastal connections.
History and Culture
During cattle drives from Jutland to Hamburg, the Ox Road passed through Horstedt. Horstedt’s innkeeping tradition also has its roots in the cattle drives. Nearby, the fieldstone church in Olderup has largely retained its original form. Since 1982, the Horstedt theatre group has performed a Low German play every year, either as a one-act play or in three acts. If you would like to include a performance in your stay, check the current dates locally.
Exploring on Foot, by Bike and on Horseback
For cycling and walking days, there are different route options to consider: a Horstedt cycling group offers summer rides of 20 to 30 km through the surrounding countryside, while the Husum Bay walking trail network includes a roughly 20 km Husum–Horstedt–Husum route. The cycling group’s dates and participation requirements may change; check locally if you are interested.
Horstedt has two riding stables. The Horstedter Wiesenhof riding centre has an indoor riding arena, an outdoor riding arena and an outdoor show-jumping arena; it also offers horse-box rentals and qualified riding lessons. Businesses and services may change. Before making specific plans, check with the business concerned to find out which services are currently available.
The site of the former animal carcass disposal facility may be suitable as a starting point or a place to rest. Before visiting, check whether conditions on site are suitable for this.
Staying Overnight in Horstedt
Horstedt has a few holiday apartments and rooms for rent. The village is also associated with rural holidays and farm stays. Availability may change; check with the accommodation provider for your travel dates.
North Frisia in a Wider Context
The wider travel destination of North Frisia opens up a broader landscape: North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. The region also includes ten Halligen, distinctive landforms within the national park. Horstedt’s own landscape is defined by the transition between marsh and geest and its agricultural hedgerow landscape.
