Grothusenkoog is located right on the North Sea coast and on the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site, by the dike. From there, views stretch towards St. Peter-Ording, Vollerwiek and the Eider Barrage. The town combines this specific coastal setting with two clear activity options: longer cycling trips along the dike or through the green Eiderstedt countryside, and the horse-riding facilities at Eichenhof.

Coast, dike and cycling trips

Two landscape features are central for cyclists. Longer trips follow the dike, with views of the North Sea, or pass through the green landscape of the Eiderstedt peninsula. Each offers a different focus for a longer ride: the coastline on one route, the green Eiderstedt countryside on the other. When planning your cycling days, you can use this distinction to decide which landscape you would most like to experience on your ride.

Icelandic horses and horse riding

Eichenhof in Grothusenkoog has a farm with Icelandic horses, welcomes guest horses and offers riding terrain. For travellers bringing their own horse, this is a specific part of the town’s profile. Horse-riding opportunities are also available in neighbouring St. Peter-Ording, including riding on the beach; a permit is required for this.

Eichenhof also hosts an annual qualifying competition for the Icelandic Horse World Championships. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the event dates in advance. This helps distinguish the annual event from the specific dates of your trip.

North Frisia as a broader setting

Beyond Grothusenkoog, the broader travel destination of North Frisia offers a larger coastal and island landscape. North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. North Frisia also encompasses ten Halligen, a distinctive landscape formation within the national park. The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and part of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. The islands and Halligen therefore represent a different regional landscape setting from Grothusenkoog’s location by the dike.

The wider destination also offers specific opportunities for observing nature: visitors can watch a diverse range of birdlife at Hauke-Haien-Koog. The SchlĂĽttsiel Information Centre has a natural history exhibition and offers guided tours of the Wadden Sea and nature conservation almost daily. Weather permitting, a guided walk along the sea dike follows. These guided activities have a different focus from a self-planned cycling trip; check the current schedule for specific visit dates.

Two named routes in North Frisia can be compared by length and starting point: the Beltringharder Route is 27 kilometres long and begins in Lüttmoorsiel. The Stollberg-Koog Tour covers 35 kilometres and starts in Reußenköge at the Amsinck House. Along with the longer rides along the dike and through Eiderstedt, these examples show different ways to choose a cycling focus: by the local landscape or by a regionally named route with a specified length.

This way, the choice of accommodation can be guided by your interests for the trip.
