Goldebek combines a direct connection to local history with cycling and walking routes through heathland and geest landscapes. The local history museum offers insights into how people lived, learned and worked in the past; outdoors, there are various routes and excursions to choose from. When planning, it is worth considering the museum, a cycling tour and a day trip as separate priorities.

Local History and the Museum

Goldebek was first recorded in 1321. The place name is explained as deriving from Danish words for infertile sandy soil and a stream; the interpretation therefore refers to land and water. The Goldebeker Mühlenstrom still flows today. Together with the local history museum, these offer different ways to get to know the place through its landscape and history.

The privately established local history museum is located on a family farm at Kirchenweg 2. The exhibition covers more than 500 square metres and is spread across more than eight rooms. It features historic living spaces, an old schoolroom, agricultural machinery and tractors, as well as household items. The focus is therefore on various aspects of everyday life, from home and school to agriculture.

Guided tours can be arranged on request. The local history museum is considered easiest to reach by car; parking is available on site. A bus stop is about one kilometre away. You can also combine a visit to the museum with a cycling tour. If you plan to visit, you can decide in advance whether the museum should be a destination in its own right or part of a day out by bike.

Geest, Heathland and Routes on Foot or by Bike

The Kammbarg Route starts in Lütjenholm, passes through Goldebek and runs through a varied geest landscape in central North Frisia. Along the way, it also passes through the Lütjenholmer Heide nature reserve. Rare landscape forms and a rich variety of characteristic flora and fauna define the character of the protected area.

The Kammbarg Route is 25.613 kilometres long and is rated easy. The distance and rating answer different planning questions: an easy rating does not replace your own assessment of whether the entire route fits into your cycling day. Check the route information before setting off.

If you would rather set off on foot, you can start at the car park in front of the “Zur alten Schmiede” community centre in Lütjenholm. From there, a path leads towards the Lütjenholmer Heidedünen nature reserve. The area was designated a protected area in 1938 and covers 16.6 hectares. Its landscape is characterised by low, heath-covered hills and marshy hollows. Check local trail conditions before setting off.

Excursions Beyond Goldebek

Goldebek offers opportunities for day trips to Denmark. The Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park on the nearby North Sea coast is another excursion destination. This adds two more options to local history and walking or cycling routes when planning your trip: a day trip to Denmark or an outing to the North Sea coast. The best way to make specific plans is to choose the theme that interests you most during your stay.

North Frisia as the Wider Regional Setting

The wider travel destination of North Frisia encompasses coastal, island and Hallig landscapes. North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. There are also ten Halligen, a distinctive type of landscape within the national park.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Goldebek, you can base your choice on your planned priorities: local history, the Kammbarg Route, or excursions to Denmark and the North Sea coast. This way, you can start planning your accommodation around the places you actually want to visit.
