The annual event calendar of the Obere Arlau Riding and Driving Club gives Behrendorf a specific seasonal focal point. At the same time, its character as a Geest village, its agricultural focus and Holsteiner horse breeding shape the community beyond individual event days. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the village’s enduring character from the club’s event dates.

Village Character and Low German

Behrendorf is a typical Geest village with a predominantly agricultural character. The community has a strong reputation for Holsteiner horse breeding. Low German is still widely used in everyday life here. The village’s character, horse breeding and everyday language thus come together as distinct facets of the community.

Events Throughout the Year

The Obere Arlau Riding and Driving Club hosts dressage and show-jumping competitions in Behrendorf. Annual highlights include the Nospa Dressur Classics in April and a major show-jumping competition in August. The program also includes competitions for young people and young horses. The two featured events therefore differ in month and discipline: dressage takes center stage in April, while August focuses on show jumping. The exact event dates may vary; check them if you are planning your trip around a competition.

The Club’s Riding Facilities

The large indoor arena measures 20 by 60 meters, has an ebb-and-flow riding surface and includes spectator seating. The smaller arena can be used for lunging, free exercise and free jumping horses. The two arenas therefore differ both in size and in their stated uses.

The club’s outdoor riding area can be used for training year-round. The sand show-jumping arena is used seasonally: an extensive course is set up there every summer. In terms of the seasons, year-round training on the outdoor area and the summer course setup are therefore two distinct details.

North Frisia: Nature and Cycling Routes

North Frisia offers nature experiences among dikes, inland dunes, moors and forests. These include walks, cycling trips through the marshes and visits to small nature reserves. The region has 441 kilometers of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum; ten Halligen, distinctive small marsh islands, are also part of the national park.

In northern North Frisia, the cycling routes are designed as circular routes, with start and end points that can be chosen individually. Route markers on signs and directional arrows on unmarked sections provide wayfinding. Two regional tours can be compared by distance: the 27-kilometer Beltringharder Route starts in Lüttmoorsiel and is one of the routes in Central North Frisia. The Stollberg-Koog Tour starts in Reußenköge at the Amsinck House and is 35 kilometers long. It is therefore eight kilometers longer. Check the route details before planning, as they may change.
