Near Aventoft, hundreds of thousands of starlings gather in the marshes, forming a living cloud in the sky. Gliding and historic buildings also give the village its distinctive character: the church and two Uthland Frisian houses tell the story of different architectural periods, while birdwatching offers different perspectives depending on where you go.

Birdwatching between marshland and water

The murmuration of starlings is a seasonal natural spectacle; its timing naturally varies. The roads beside Haasberger See and RuttebĂĽller See make good spots from which to watch it. If this is to be the focus of your trip, it makes sense to be flexible with your dates rather than plan around a fixed time.

The bridge over the Verlath pumping station offers a different view: from there, you can see across the Rudbøl So towards Denmark, and there is also an opportunity for birdwatching. The sights differ: the murmuration of starlings is the main attraction at the two lakes, while the bridge combines views of the water with birdwatching.

Gliding, weather permitting

The SĂĽdtondern air sports club operates gliders at Aventoft airfield, mainly on weekends. If the weather prevents normal gliding operations, two motor gliders are available. This means gliding follows a different schedule from birdwatching: it takes place mostly on weekends and depends on the weather, while the murmuration of starlings is seasonal and its timing varies.

Aventoft Church: centuries of architectural history

Aventoft Church dates back to a Romanesque building from around 1250. It was extended to the east in 1767/68, and the present Weigle organ was installed in 1972. The dates bring the different phases of the building’s history and furnishings to life.

Aventoft Church, together with its furnishings, churchyard, gravestones dating from before 1870 and churchyard gate, is considered an ensemble of historical, artistic, urban-planning and cultural-landscape significance. The site encompasses more than just the church building: the churchyard and gate are also part of the designated ensemble.

Two Uthland Frisian houses, with different features

The Uthland Frisian house at Brandkuhle 10 is considered a 19th-century building: a single-storey, L-shaped brick building with a thatched half-hipped roof and an agricultural wing on the west side. The house at DorfstraĂźe 4 is believed to date from 1804. It is considered a single-storey brick building with a thatched half-hipped roof; it also has a dormer with a hay hatch and two house trees.

The two houses share a single-storey brick design and a thatched half-hipped roof. The L-shaped layout and west wing distinguish the house at Brandkuhle; the dormer, hay hatch and house trees set the house at DorfstraĂźe apart. Their architectural features make it possible to tell the buildings apart without overlooking their shared basic characteristics.
