Siptenfelde lies on the HarzhochstraĂźe 242 and is an old settlement in the Lower Harz. The village was rebuilt on a plateau surrounded by dense mixed forest. Forest, plateau and local history thus form a shared focus. Nearby, trails to a castle ruin, through a protected beech forest and along a stream add to the picture.
Settlement History on the Plateau
A document mentions Sipponuelth as a village. In it, King Otto I confirmed his mother Mathilde’s donation to the Quedlinburg convent. Another point of reference in the village’s history is the “Neuedorf im Siptenfelde”: Prince Friedrich of Anhalt-Bernburg-Harzgerode had it established west of the old village site; a manor farm was later built there as well. The documentary mention and the establishment of Neuedorf are two distinct points of reference for understanding Siptenfelde’s history.
Trails and Historic Places Nearby
A trail nearby passes through a European protected beech forest habitat (FFH) to the ruins of Erichsburg Castle. A hike from the ruins towards Alexisbad follows the Friedensbach through wetlands and leads to a turn-off for Marienquelle, 500 metres before Alexisbad. The two descriptions have different focuses: the route to Erichsburg highlights the beech forest and ruins, while the hike towards Alexisbad focuses on the stream, wetlands and spring. Before setting out, it is worth checking trail conditions on the day of your visit.
The suspected site of Siptenfelde’s imperial hunting lodge is also a historical point of reference nearby: it is thought to have stood at the present-day Uhlenstein forestry lodge in the Uhlenbach valley. This remains a supposition and adds another, not definitively established, point of reference to the village’s history.
Harzgerode as the Broader Destination
The broader travel destination of Harzgerode offers further cultural and natural attractions. Harzgerode Castle is a Renaissance building with a stair tower and a round tower. It was newly built between 1549 and 1552 and served as the residence of the Harzgerode branch of the Anhalt princely house from 1635 to 1709. At the HARZKUGELEUM in the castle, a beechwood ball takes visitors through various themed worlds. Through its shape and weight, it conveys information about the Lower Harz, mining, nature, and local and regional history across the ages.
The summer toboggan run is also part of the broader travel destination of Harzgerode: it runs for 1,100 metres, curving down from the Harzgerode plateau into the Selke Valley to the promenade in Alexisbad, and descends around 75 metres in elevation. Tobogganing depends on there being enough snow; when there is too little, the route is also suitable for a winter hike. The attractions therefore have distinct focuses: Siptenfelde is known for its settlement history and nearby trails, while the castle and summer toboggan run offer separate experiences in the broader destination of Harzgerode.
