Castle history and nature experiences give a trip to Harzgerode different highlights: at the castle, a beechwood ball takes visitors through several themed worlds, while trails and outdoor activity stations invite exploration. When planning, it is worth distinguishing these local attractions from the wider range of options in the Harz travel region.

Harzgerode Castle and its history

The castle was rebuilt between 1549 and 1552. The Renaissance building has a stair tower and a round tower; from 1635 to 1709, it served as the residence of the Harzgerode branch of the Anhalt princely house. Its construction and later period as a residence mark different historical milestones. St. Mary’s Church is also part of the town’s history: it is a Baroque building dating from 1697 to 1699. Another stop along this timeline is the Köthen Hut, built in 1897 by the Köthen branch of the Harz Club as a shelter on Kapellenfelsen.

The HARZKUGELEUM is located in the castle. Here, a beechwood ball travels with visitors through different themed worlds. Its shape and weight convey information about the Lower Harz, mining, nature, and local and regional history through the ages. This experience brings several topics together, which can also be explored separately during a visit. Opening hours vary by season; check them before planning your visit.

Trails, ball runs and winter experiences

The HARZGERĂ–DER KUGELsPASS connects several play and audio stations: along the route there are two playgrounds and eight stations with ball runs. Multilingual audio stations complement the experience. They are available in German for adults and children, as well as in Russian, Danish, English and Chinese. If you value play activities or audio content when choosing an excursion, these specific features can help guide your decision.

The Harzgerode Nature Discovery Trail offers a different experience: its stations include a quiz, a barefoot path and a sound organ. In winter, the natural toboggan run offers another option. It runs for 1,100 metres, winding down from the Harzgerode plateau into the Selke Valley to the promenade in Alexisbad, with a total descent of around 75 metres. Tobogganing requires sufficient snow; if there is too little snow, the route is also suitable for a winter hike. Here, the choice between tobogganing and hiking depends on the snow conditions.

The Harzgerode Advent Trails, held on the second Sunday of Advent, are an annual event in town. This pre-Christmas experience is for the whole family; specific dates and the programme may vary. If you would like to plan around this seasonal event, check the dates and programme for the year in question.

Getting there and the wider region

To travel to Harzgerode by train, first take a train to Quedlinburg, then continue to Harzgerode on the Selketalbahn. Check the timetable for your travel date.

The wider Harz travel region offers another setting for nature and cultural interests: the national park covers 24,732 hectares, or around ten percent of the entire Harz. Its eight visitor centres and national park houses provide information about the park, hiking tips, exhibitions and film screenings. Guided walks and excursions are offered with rangers, experts, national park guides, and national park forest guides; for specific dates, check the current programme.

The Harzer Wandernadel also covers the entire Harz: it connects 222 stamping stations. Those who collect all the stamps receive the title “Harz Hiking Emperor.” This regional perspective complements the local castle and trail experiences without conflating them with destinations elsewhere.
