The prominent castle tower, former courthouse prison cells and courtyard, and a former civil defence bunker dating from the GDR era give Zörbig’s castle complex several historical layers. The KulturQuadrat Schloss Zörbig is housed in the former castle; it brings together the local history museum, municipal archive, town library and Victor Blüthgen Hall. The castle therefore offers a glimpse of everything from cultural institutions to the physical traces of its former uses.

Castle, fortifications and museum

Zörbig’s medieval development took place within a fortified town wall. The complex included three gates, the Hausmann Tower, ramparts and ditches. Parts of the route of the former town ditches can still be made out in green spaces, keeping some of the history of the fortifications visible in the townscape.

The local history museum’s collection comprises around 15,000 objects, dating from the Stone Age to the present day. The current exhibition covers prehistory and early history, Slavic settlement, and Zörbig’s history from 961 to 1800. The collection and exhibition span different periods: the collection reaches to the present day, while the exhibition covers Zörbig’s history up to 1800. As exhibition themes can change, it is advisable to check what is currently on display before your visit.

The local history museum can be visited independently, in a group or as part of a guided tour. Town tours can be arranged through the KulturQuadrat from April to October. When planning your visit, check the available options and specific dates.

Churches and chess history

St. Mauritius Town Church is documented from 1202 and contains a late Romanesque triumphal cross. Other churches include St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and fortified village churches in the surrounding districts. The region’s ecclesiastical heritage thus ranges from a town church documented at an early date, complete with its artwork, to the fortified churches in the surrounding districts.

The Löberitz Chess Museum displays chess pieces and boards from four centuries, along with chess clocks, pennants, badges and medals. Chess computers can also be viewed there. The collection brings together historical game equipment, technical devices and other objects related to chess.

Lido and cycling route

Zörbig’s lido is right next to the Leipzig Pond on Spörener Straße and has a 50-metre stainless-steel pool. Check the lido’s current status before visiting. The Fuhne cycle route connects the cycle paths along the Mulde and Saale rivers and is linked to the history of the Wettin dynasty and organ building in Zörbig. Those choosing a cycling route based on its connections to the wider network will find a link here between the Mulde and Saale; the historical themes add a cultural perspective.

In the wider Anhalt-Bitterfeld destination

Anhalt-Bitterfeld district lies along the Elbe and Mulde rivers, between the Dübener Heide and Fläming regions, and covers 1,450 km². Another example in the wider destination is the Baroque Maze of Altjeßnitz: at 2,600 m², it is Germany’s largest surviving Baroque maze. These regional details offer a broader perspective on Anhalt-Bitterfeld alongside Zörbig’s local and cultural attractions.
