At Goitzschesee, the history of water and former resource extraction come together: the lake near Bitterfeld is considered one of the youngest in Germany. Lignite was once mined there, with amber extracted as a by-product. This offers you an unusual introduction to Anhalt-Bitterfeld: the landscape tells a story not only of rivers and nature, but also of how the area was used in the past.

River Landscapes and Different Perspectives

Anhalt-Bitterfeld district lies along the Elbe and Mulde rivers, between the Dübener Heide and Fläming, and covers 1,450 km². This location provides a broad framework for exploring the area: rivers, natural landscapes and individual discoveries offer different perspectives on the region. In Anhalt-Bitterfeld, the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve is a place for peace, discovery and relaxation. Thus, alongside the former resource extraction at Goitzschesee, there is also a nature-focused perspective on the district.

The Bitterfelder Bogen is a special viewpoint. Its path is 540 metres long in total and features platforms and benches. The uppermost ramp ends at a balcony with panoramic views over the area around Bitterfeld. The viewpoint combines views of the landscape with a path that is itself part of the visitor experience.

Town History, Tower Views and Garden Art

In Zörbig, the local history museum takes visitors through the town's eventful history across twelve rooms, from prehistory and early history to the recent past. You can climb the museum's castle tower for sweeping views across the surrounding countryside. In Zörbig, two ways of exploring the area come together: the town's development over time in the exhibition and views of the surroundings from above. If you would like to experience both, you can check the current opening hours before your visit.

A very different discovery awaits you in Altjeßnitz: at 2,600 m², the Baroque Maze is the largest surviving Baroque maze in Germany. Its clear designation as a Baroque garden and its size make it a destination in its own right, alongside the scenic viewpoints and historical themes in Zörbig. When planning your visit, you can therefore focus on different interests without expecting every place to offer the same kind of experience.

Saxony-Anhalt as a Broader Cultural Perspective

The broader travel destination of Saxony-Anhalt offers a wider cultural perspective. The Bauhaus Dessau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bauhaus building, the Masters' Houses and the Törten housing estate invite visitors to take guided tours, join workshops and discuss design and society. At the Bauhaus Museum Dessau, the collection “Versuchsstätte Bauhaus. The Collection” tells the story of the Bauhaus school in Dessau. These themes add a distinct Bauhaus perspective to your exploration of Anhalt-Bitterfeld within the wider travel destination of Saxony-Anhalt.

As you explore Anhalt-Bitterfeld, you can focus on different themes: former land use and landscapes at Goitzschesee, views from the Bitterfelder Bogen, town history and tower views in Zörbig, or garden art in Altjeßnitz. Which stop appeals to you most depends on whether you would like to focus on landscapes, history, viewpoints or a historic garden.
