In Osternienburger Land, discoveries range from medieval history and Stone Age tombs to wet meadows and cycling tours. Each place has its own focus: in Reppichau, the Sachsenspiegel takes centre stage; Wulfen combines a church and a megalithic tomb; and the Chörau museum farm is devoted to everyday life in past decades. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether culture, landscapes or cycling will shape your visit.

The Sachsenspiegel and history in Wulfen

The open-air “Sachsenspiegel” museum in Reppichau brings figures from the Sachsenspiegel to life throughout the village with sculptures, murals and heraldic shields. This reflects a specific historical connection: Eike von Repgow, probably from Reppichau, wrote the Sachsenspiegel at the beginning of the 13th century at the behest of Count Hoyer of Falkenstein. The museum and the village itself explore the same subject in different ways—as a historical text and as depictions displayed throughout the village.

Wulfen also offers two clearly defined landmarks from different eras. The church in Wulfen dates back to 1070. On Hoher Berg, you can also find the 3.60-metre-long Wulfen megalithic tomb, a Neolithic passage grave with three capstones and a passage. It is considered an important prehistoric site in Anhalt, notable for its unusually rich finds. The church and the tomb provide different historical points of reference for your cultural itinerary, though they do not tell the same chapter of local history.

More archaeological and everyday-life insights

Near Drosa lies the Teufelskeller, a megalithic tomb dating back around 5,000 years, with six granite supporting stones and a massive capstone. The Teufelskeller is signposted from the centre of Drosa; there is a small car park and a rest area nearby. This means that local directions and a place to take a break are part of the practical planning, while the information about the tomb itself highlights its archaeological significance.

The Chörau museum farm focuses on different questions: two furnished rooms show what life was like from 1935 to 1970. The museum farm also includes an authentically furnished GDR apartment from the 1970s, with a kitchen, a teenager’s room, a bedroom and a living room. These different periods offer a glimpse into domestic life and everyday routines. For refreshments, the small inn serves coffee, cake, drinks and ice cream. The Knights’ Hall hosts living-room concerts, talks and other events.

Maxdorf also offers a specific place to stop for a meal: since 2012, a restaurant has operated in a building in front of the manor house at Maxdorf estate. The garden features old and rare trees as well as an old well. The café and events in Chörau and the restaurant with its garden in Maxdorf are different ways to round off a day of culture or discovery.

The Wulfener Bruch and cycling routes

The Wulfener Bruch is a wet-meadow area covering more than 800 hectares and forms part of the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve. This gives the landscape a distinct place in your trip alongside the historical sites. For exploring by bicycle, the Wasser | Wiesen | Steine route is a good option; the EuroVelo Route R1 and the Luther Trail are also accessible by bike.

For access by public transport, consider the railway stations at Wulfen, Sibbesdorf and Elsnigk. These provide specific options for getting here, while the routes and tours mentioned above can help you plan your cycling. You can choose a holiday apartment based on what you want to do during your trip.
