The Maare-Mosel Cycle Route runs alongside Udler on a former railway line. Walking trails also lead from Udler towards several maars. Together with nearby Sangweiher, the village offers specific starting points for active days in the Eifel.

Cycling and hiking around Udler

The Maare-Mosel Cycle Route from Daun to Bernkastel-Kues is 58.5 kilometres long and has very few climbs. It passes through forests, by maar lakes and through the GroĂźes Schlitzohr cycling tunnel. The cycle route runs alongside Udler; the route description refers to the broader route between Daun and Bernkastel-Kues.

Hiking trails lead from Udler towards Holzmaar, DĂĽrre Maar and Hitsche Maar. The Sangweiher nature reserve is about two kilometres away on foot. This means that days spent walking can take in both named maar destinations and a nature reserve nearby.

The Burgen via ferrata is in the immediate vicinity of Udler. The Manderscheid Burgen via ferrata comprises three stages, which can be completed individually or linked by short walking sections. This lets you divide the route into individual sections rather than planning all the stages as one continuous tour.

Sangweiher and other maars

Sangweiher and the nature and bird reserve of the same name lie between Schalkenmehren and Udler. Sangweiher is considered an ancient maar and an important habitat for many bird species. Cormorants and the rarer red kite hunt and feed here. Two birdwatching stations are located on the shore, concealed among the trees.

Another maar in the region is Pulvermaar, near Gillenfeld. At 74 metres, it is considered the deepest maar in the Eifel. In summer, it is a popular place for swimming and boating. The seasonal timing is important when planning: swimming and boating are part of the summer offering here.

The Vulkaneifel as a regional setting

The Vulkaneifel provides the broader geological context for the maars. So far, 77 maars have been documented there and 350 eruption centres counted, about 270 of them from the more recent period. Ulmener Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. Maars are lakes of volcanic origin, shaping both the landscape and the region’s geological character.

The Vulkaneifel also offers a range of tour formats for longer hikes. The Vulkaneifel Trails lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig; they are marked and signposted and include half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes. The Eifelsteig is 313 kilometres long and runs from Aachen-KornelimĂĽnster to Trier. Its eleventh stage runs from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometres long. The Lieserpfad consists of four stages covering a total of 74 kilometres, from the source of the Lieser to the Moselle. It follows a river through a volcanic landscape and passes maars, castles and mills.
