The Maare-Mosel Cycle Route begins in Daun, and hiking trails from here also lead to mineral springs. At the same time, St. Nicholas Church and the ruins of Daun Castle preserve traces of history; the Eifel Volcano Museum is dedicated to the region’s volcanism. When planning your stay, it is worth deciding first whether cycling, hiking, culture or time in the park will be its main focus.

Cycling from Daun

The Maare-Mosel Cycle Route begins in Daun. An e-bike circuit also starts and ends here. E-bikes can be rented from the GesundLand Tourist Information Centre; it is best to check availability in advance. On the return leg, the route crosses the Daun Viaduct, which offers a view towards the town. This gives you the choice of a cycle route starting in Daun or a circular ride that returns to town.

Mountain biking in the Vulkaneifel

The Vulkaneifel Trail Park network covers around 750 kilometres and more than 17,500 metres of elevation gain. The park offers mountain bike routes of varying difficulty on woodland and forest tracks; it also includes the KoulShore singletrack area. The trails are waymarked so that riders can follow the routes without GPS or map assistance. Before setting out, it is advisable to check current conditions and trail markings.

Hiking to the Drees springs

The HeimatSpur Dreeswanderweg starts at the FORUM Daun, reaches the Hotzendrees and passes close to the Kolverater Drees, just outside Daun. The HeimatSpur Kleiner Dauner is an 8.5-kilometre circular hike starting and ending in Daun, which also reaches the Hotzendrees. You can choose between the two trails by their different landmarks: the Dreeswanderweg by its start at the FORUM and its two Drees springs, and the Kleiner Dauner by its marked circular route. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Spa park and the Daun maars

Daun Spa Park is a peaceful public park with the DUNARIS mineral spring, facilities for drinking and bathing cures, and a Kneipp facility. Several hiking trails can be accessed from there, including the Eifelsteig and Lieserpfad. Daun is also close to the three volcanic lakes known as the Daun maars. The park and mineral spring thus add another focus to the hiking trails during your stay in town.

Town history and volcanism

St. Nicholas Church has a preserved Romanesque crypt that survived the bombing on 2 January 1945. The ruins of Daun Castle retain a ring wall and a bastion tower with loopholes. The Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun is housed in the former Daun district administration building. Interactive models, information panels and pictures illustrate the region’s volcanism. The crypt and castle ruins offer a glimpse of surviving historic structures, while the museum explores volcanic themes through its exhibits.

Wildlife watching and summer toboggan run

At the Daun Wildlife and Adventure Park, viewing platforms and feeding stations offer close-up encounters with animals; the park also has a miniature animal farm. An 800-metre summer toboggan run is located just outside the park. It is best to check its current operating hours before visiting.
