Schutz lies in the valley of the Kleine Kyll, surrounded by wooded hills. The HeimatSpur Burberg Trail gives a hiking-focused trip a specific local setting: the circular route starts and ends at St. Wendelin’s Chapel in Schutz. Along the way, it includes wooded stretches, the Speicherbach stream and the Kleine Kyll river, as well as the Burberg and the remains of a Roman fortification.

The Burberg Trail Loop

The 13.1-kilometre circular hiking trail is rated moderate. The walking time is about 3 hours and 45 minutes; the ascent totals 230 metres, as does the descent. The start and finish are at St. Wendelin’s Chapel on Dorfstraße in Schutz. Parking is available at the chapel. As local parking arrangements may change, check the situation before setting out. Also check whether any temporary diversions or closures affect the route. The walking time is a guide to the hiking portion of a day; breaks and other activities add to it.

Volcanic Mountain, Forest and Cultural Heritage

The Burberg is a volcanic mountain in the Vulkaneifel Nature Park, formed around 11,000 years ago. The Burberg Trail includes it in the loop and also passes through stretches of forest and follows the Speicherbach stream and the Kleine Kyll river. Remains of a Roman fortification from the 4th century have been identified along the route as cultural heritage. The loop thus combines the Burberg as a volcanic mountain with a historical cultural site along the trail.

The Wider Vulkaneifel Region

To date, 77 maars have been identified in the Vulkaneifel; 350 eruption centres have also been counted, about 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. Maars are water-filled crater lakes; the Manderscheid castles are also destinations in the Vulkaneifel. This regional perspective complements a look at Schutz without equating the features of the Vulkaneifel with the town itself.

Compare Hikes in the Region

The Vulkaneifel Trails lead to scenic highlights on either side of the Eifelsteig. They are marked and signposted, and the options range from half-day and full-day hikes to multi-day treks. Comparing trail lengths gives a sense of their different scales: the Vulcano Trail is a 26.2-kilometre circular route east of Schalkenmehren. The eleventh stage of the Eifelsteig runs from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometres long. Both routes are longer than the 13.1-kilometre Burberg Trail; their lengths and route types can be compared when planning a hiking trip.

Geology at the Museum, Too

The Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun features three-dimensional landscape models of scoria cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on West Eifel volcanism. The Strohn Volcano House is an interactive museum. Its exhibits include a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, about six metres long and four metres high. The two examples have different focuses: in Daun, the emphasis is on several landforms and exhibits, while in Strohn, the scale of the lava fissure wall can be understood from its measurements.
