Five municipally designated circular trails give Oberstadtfeld a concrete selection of routes for walks and hikes. They are 5 to 8.5 kilometres long, crossing meadows and passing through forests to viewpoints overlooking the village, and are mostly paved. The trails are considered suitable for strollers and for people with mobility impairments.

Circular trails and longer routes

The 14.8-kilometre “Tausendjähriger Weg” circular trail runs around Oberstadtfeld and Niederstadtfeld, mostly away from asphalt and through forests and meadows. Benches and wooden loungers are placed along the route. It differs from the five municipal circular trails in both its greater length and its different surface. If you are planning this option, check the signs and trail conditions locally; the rest stops along the route are ideal for planned breaks.

Route 5 offers a specific option with its own course: the paved loop runs around Oberstadtfeld, passing the fishing pond and barbecue hut, and offers views of the village. It is considered suitable for strollers and for people who use wheelchairs or walking aids. When choosing a route, the surface and the named points along the way matter as well as the distance. Surfaces and facilities may change.

Hiking in the Vulkaneifel

In the wider area around Oberstadtfeld, the Eifelsteig and its Vulkaneifel partner trails form an established hiking network. The Eifelsteig passes through the neighbouring towns of Neroth, Daun and Üdersdorf. In the wider Vulkaneifel destination, the Vulkaneifel trails are marked and signposted; they lead to scenic highlights on either side of the Eifelsteig. The network includes half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes. Two routes with specified distances illustrate the regional selection: the Vulcano-Pfad is a 26.2-kilometre circular trail east of Schalkenmehren; the eleventh stage of the Eifelsteig, from Daun to Manderscheid, covers 23.4 kilometres. For both regional examples, check current trail conditions before setting off. In the wider Vulkaneifel destination, mountain biking also complements the hiking options: the Trailpark Vulkaneifel has a mountain bike trail network of around 750 kilometres, with more than 17,500 metres of elevation gain.

Volcanic landscapes and regional insights

To date, 77 maars have been identified in the Vulkaneifel; 350 eruption centres have also been counted, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmener Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. Offering a cultural introduction to the region’s volcanic history, the Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun displays three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on West Eifel volcanism. The Vulkanhaus Strohn is an interactive museum featuring a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, approximately six metres long and four metres high.
