Castle ruins, a medieval medicinal herb garden and trails through vineyards and the central Selz Valley shape Stadecken-Elsheim’s character. When planning a stay, there are several themes to choose from: local history and architecture, insights into winegrowing, or hikes where soil profiles explain geology, terroir, wine-growing sites and soils.

Two village centers with the character of winegrowing villages

The two village centers display the typical layout of a Rheinhessen winegrowing village. Local sights include Stadeck Castle, vineyard towers, a round-domed trullo and the customs tower beside the Selz in Elsheim. The buildings and towers offer distinct points of interest: the trullo stands out for its round dome, while the castle complex and customs tower reveal other facets of local history. This makes it possible to get to know the place through its varied architectural features, rather than associating it only with winegrowing.

Castle complex and herb garden

The Stadeck Castle complex comprises the main building, remains of the circular wall and corner tower, the castle barn and the Small Barn, as well as the former administrative and school building, the castle garden and the courtyard. The courtyard is also used for outdoor events. As a medieval medicinal herb garden, the castle garden offers another way to explore local history: visitors can learn more about the plants’ historical uses there. Architectural history and knowledge of past plant uses thus provide two distinct themes.

Terroir trails through vineyards and the Selz Valley

The Selz Valley Terroir Routes are one- to two-hour hikes through vineyards and the central Selz Valley. Eight soil profiles explain geology, terroir, wine-growing sites and soils. The trails combine physical activity with insights into the natural and viticultural foundations of the landscape. Local routes include STR 2 in Elsheim, at 6.4 kilometers, and STR 3 in Stadecken, at 7.8 kilometers. STR 3 is therefore 1.4 kilometers longer than STR 2. The distances allow for a direct comparison of the routes, while the one- to two-hour duration describes the general timeframe for the Selz Valley Terroir Routes.

Wine tastings and Rheinhessen cuisine

Winegrowing has a long tradition in Stadecken-Elsheim; local winemakers produce quality wines and sparkling wine. At wine tastings, winemakers explain grape varieties, wines and cellar production. The experience can also offer insights into rustic Rheinhessen cuisine. Wine therefore provides a different focus from exploring the architecture or soil profiles. If you plan a specific wine tasting, check availability directly with the winery.

In the wider Mainz-Bingen destination

In the wider Mainz-Bingen destination, the landscape of the southern district broadens the regional context: the rolling hills of Rheinhessen, specialty crops of fruit and vegetables including asparagus, and extensive vineyards shape the scenery. The Mainz-Bingen district includes Rheinhessen, with 26,300 hectares of vineyard area; it is Germany’s largest winegrowing region. This places Stadecken-Elsheim’s long winegrowing tradition in a broader landscape and viticultural context.

A distinct regional hiking route is the approximately 75-kilometer Rheinterrassenweg, from Worms to Mainz. Oppenheim and Bodenheim are stages in the valley that make it easier to access the Rhine Terrace. The route is on a different scale from the one- to two-hour Selz Valley Terroir hikes. These different route formats can help you choose the focus of your stay.
