Almost half of Sankt Johann’s municipal area is planted with grapevines. Golf and several trails are additional focal points on the Wißberg. A historic village landscape, St. John’s Church and preserved farmsteads complete the picture. This makes it possible to combine three different interests when choosing a destination: viticulture, local history and activities on the Wißberg.
Viticulture and Historic Village Landscape
Sankt Johann is considered a Rheinhessen wine village and preserves a distinctive historic village landscape. Winemakers in Sankt Johann produce wine from the Klostergarten Steinberg and Geyersberg vineyards, as well as from the Abtey wine-growing area. The large share of vineyard land in the municipality makes viticulture a defining part of the village’s character.
Wilhelminian-era farmsteads are also part of the historic building stock: many of them have been preserved. Together with St. John’s Church, they offer more than a single point of reference for the village’s history.
St. John’s Church and Architectural History
Construction of today’s St. John’s Church began in the 1330s or early 1340s; the first construction phase was probably completed toward the end of the 1350s. The church is a High Gothic, three-aisled pseudo-basilica and is among the most significant village churches in Rheinhessen. Five wall paintings have been preserved inside.
Those interested in architectural history will find several aspects to consider: the dating of the first construction phase, the church’s architecture and the surviving wall paintings. Together with the Wilhelminian-era farmsteads, these offer a view of different elements of the historic village landscape.
Golf and Trails on the Wißberg
The Wißberg reaches 270 metres and is one of the highest elevations in Rheinhessen. The Golfclub Rheinhessen course is located there, within the municipal boundaries of Sankt Johann. The course covers 75 hectares, is a par-72 championship course and offers sweeping panoramic views across the Rheinhessen landscape.
The hiking trails on the Wißberg also vary in length. The Hiwweltour Wißberg is a 9.8-kilometre circular trail around the Wißberg with 209 metres of elevation gain. The Panoramaweg on the Wißberg is 4.5 kilometres long and has very little elevation gain. Its described features include places to sit, distant views and the opportunity to watch golfers and winemakers at work. The shorter distance and elevation-gain details help you compare the two trails.
The Klimaschutzpfad follows the Wißberg Panoramaweg and presents topics related to climate protection and sustainability in a family-friendly way. The Rheinhessen Way of St. James also passes through Sankt Johann. Check current route details before setting out, as route information may change.
Market and Travel Timing
The Sankt Johanner-Markt is a tradition dating back to the pilgrimage era and takes place on the weekend after June 24. If you would like to plan your visit around this date, check the date for the relevant year. This makes it possible to consider the market as a distinct seasonal highlight alongside viticulture, village history and the trails on the Wißberg.
In the broader Mainz-Bingen destination
In the south of Mainz-Bingen district, the landscape is shaped by Rheinhessen’s rolling hills, specialty fruit and vegetable crops including asparagus, and extensive vineyard areas producing Rheinhessen wine. Mainz-Bingen district includes Rheinhessen, which spans 26,300 hectares of vineyards and is Germany’s largest wine-growing region. These regional features provide a distinct context for Mainz-Bingen; they should not be equated with the characteristics of Sankt Johann.
