Schopp is a destination for days when you want to include forest trails, cycling and a local technical feature in your plans. More than 50 kilometres of marked hiking trails, tour starting points at the train station and the old waterworks offer a range of different highlights.

Hiking and Horse Riding in Schopp Forest

The municipality of Schopp owns around 800 hectares of forest. Schopp Forest has a well-developed network of trails for hiking and horse riding. Schopp also has more than 50 kilometres of marked hiking trails. This means hiking is not the only option in Schopp Forest; horse riding is another use of the trail network.

Schopp’s trails are part of the Holzland hiking trails of the Palatinate Forest Association and the West Palatinate hiking trails, a regional network. These links place the local trails within a wider hiking context. You can focus your choices on Schopp or also consider hiking trails connected to the wider region.

A Hiking Stage Starting at the Train Station

Schopp is a railway station on the Kaiserslautern–Pirmasens line. The first stage of the Pfälzer Waldpfad starts at the train station and runs from Schopp to Johanniskreuz; it is 15.3 kilometres long. For your planning, this is a specific stage that can be distinguished from the more than 50 kilometres of marked hiking trails: this is a named route section with a start and finish, while the other figure refers to a hiking trail network. Check the current timetable for specific travel times.

After a small forest pond, the first stage reaches the “Moosalbsprung” spring, a pleasant spot for a short break. Further along, the route follows the Moosalbe through the Karlstal Gorge. The route thus features both a notable stopping point and another landscape area in the vicinity of the destination.

Mountain Biking and Cycling

Tour 3 of the Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park starts at the train station in Schopp; the town is also an entry point to the park. The station is therefore a starting point for different tours: the Pfälzer Waldpfad hiking stage and a mountain bike tour. This can help you choose what to focus on without conflating the two activities.

The Whitsun race has been held on the cycle racing track at Eichwald Stadium for more than 50 years. Schopp has also hosted the German Cross-Country Championships three times. If you would like to plan your trip around a specific event, check the dates in advance.

A Local Technical Feature

The old waterworks is another of Schopp’s distinctive local features. It has been lovingly renovated, and its old water pump is still in working order. Alongside forest trails and cycling, it offers a technical highlight that differs from the activity-focused attractions.

More Highlights in the Wider Kaiserslautern Destination

If you also include the wider Kaiserslautern destination in your plans, the Mehlinger Heide offers a different landscape. It is considered the largest heathland area in southern Germany. The heathland nature trail is about 1.5 kilometres long and includes information boards and stations; the heathland is also connected to the Palatinate Forest hiking trail network. Guided tours are available at any time. Check the details in advance if you are planning a guided tour.

A cultural highlight in the wider Kaiserslautern destination is the abbey church in Otterberg. Dating from the 12th century, it is considered a monumental masterpiece of early Gothic architecture and is among the most significant buildings in the Palatinate. The Mehlinger Heide and the abbey church therefore offer different themes from Schopp’s local forest trails, tour starting points and waterworks.
