Landstuhl offers two defining ways to experience a stay: the history surrounding Nanstein Castle and Franz von Sickingen, and trails for walking and cycling. Nanstein Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1253. Its hill rises 80 metres above Landstuhl, offering sweeping views across the town to the Northern Palatinate Uplands.

Nanstein Castle and the Sickingen Museum

In summer, the 100-metre-long and 50-metre-wide Nanstein Castle provides the setting for the Landstuhl Castle Plays, concerts and guided tours of the castle. If you want to plan your trip around one of these events, check the latest dates in advance.

The Sickingen Museum in the Zehntenscheune (Tithe Barn) explores Franz von Sickingen’s life, his political and intellectual development, his historical context and his legacy. Exhibits include the original of a letter to the assembly of knights in Schweinfurt from January 1523 and pamphlets from the Reformation period. There is also a work dedicated to Martin Luther, as well as dialogues by Ulrich von Hutten, written at Ebernburg Castle in 1521.

The exhibition also draws on written records, images and objects, the Sickingen Library, and loans from the Fallot-Burghardt family and the town archive. Alongside individual historical documents, it presents a range of materials relating to Sickingen’s history.

Walking and cycling

The “Burg-Nanstein-Weg” quality hiking trail, certified by the German Hiking Association, passes the most beautiful sights in Landstuhl. Another way to explore the town’s history is the individually planned walking tour of the old town: with a town map and a smartphone or MP3 player, follow in Franz von Sickingen’s footsteps through the old town.

The Palatinate Lakes Tour starts at Landstuhl railway station; use the northern underpass. It passes Silbersee near Kindsbach and covers about 62 kilometres through the West Palatinate. Its approximate length makes it a substantial cycling tour in its own right. As trail conditions can change, check for current updates before setting off.

Guided tours are offered in the Landstuhl municipal association area, giving visitors the chance to explore the historic old town or Nanstein Castle. The historic town tour is listed as lasting about two hours. If a guided tour is to shape your day’s plans, check dates and availability in advance.

Views and other things to see

Close to Landstuhl, just west of the town, the 19-metre-high Bismarck Tower stands on Kirchberg. It was designed by architect Wilhelm Kreis (1873–1955), donated by mining industrialist Carl Ferdinand von Stumm-Halberg (1836–1901), and inaugurated in 1900. Inside the tower, a 74-step stone staircase leads to an observation platform with views over Landstuhl.

Landstuhl’s natural swimming pool can also be considered as a separate part of your trip planning: it opened in 2006 as a swimming pond complex. If you plan to visit, check current opening hours and access information.

Consider whether local history or cycling should take up more of your stay.

In the wider region

The Landstuhler Bruch is a depression at an elevation of 200 metres, 30 kilometres long and up to 7 kilometres wide. It stretches from Waldmohr in the southwest, through Ramstein-Miesenbach and Landstuhl, to Kaiserslautern in the northeast.

In the wider Kaiserslautern travel region, Mehlinger Heide has a heathland nature trail of about 1.5 kilometres, with information boards and activity stations. It connects to the Palatinate Forest hiking trail network, and guided tours are available at any time. Check trail details locally before setting out. At district level, the district of Kaiserslautern is a member of the Rhine-Neckar Transport Association (VRN); timetables and fare information are available on the VRN website.
