The “Auf dem Köpfchen” Eifel Viewpoint brings Habscheid’s sweeping landscape into focus; the Emischjass and historic buildings offer other, quite distinct topics. Those choosing Habscheid as a travel destination can explore its viewpoints, history of routes and architectural heritage.

Views and Landscape

The “Auf dem Köpfchen” Eifel Viewpoint near Habscheid opens up a sweeping panorama: from the Our Valley, the view extends across the Alfbach Valley to the Schneifel and on over the Prüm Valley and the Prüm Limestone Basin into the Arzfeld collective municipality. There are also views of villages, lakes, river valleys, hedgerow landscapes, heathland and moors. Named valleys and varied landscape forms sit side by side here—a distinctive focus for travellers who enjoy taking in expansive landscapes.

The Emischjass and the History of Routes

The Emischjass is a deep ravine between trees and hedges. It was shaped by wagon traffic and a natural watercourse flowing towards the Bierbach. It was also once a main route connecting Lichtenborn, Kesfeld and Habscheid; it was also known as the Roman Road and Military Road. The Emischjass therefore brings together two aspects: a landscape shaped by traffic and water, and its former importance as a route linking three villages.

A municipal development report from 2016 describes a procession to the Donatus Cross on the first Sunday in August. People prayed for protection from severe weather.

Church, Mill and Historic Monuments

The Church of St. Lucia in Habscheid is a protected historic monument. The south walls of the nave and chancel, as well as the three-sided chancel apse, date from no later than the 15th century. Two other historic monuments can be distinguished by their forms and dates: the wayside cross at Hauptstraße 18 is a post-Baroque shaft cross dating from 1806. At the junction of Hauptstraße and Neustraße, the torso of a late Gothic niche cross dating from 1554 is listed as a historic monument. The two dates are 252 years apart.

The Habscheid Mill lies northeast of Habscheid. It is a stately three-winged complex dating from the mid-19th century and listed as a historic monument. At the Habscheid Mill, the Hollbach flows into the Alfbach, which is a right-bank tributary of the Prüm. The location is also a specific point of interest for cyclists: the Prüm–St. Vith cycle route passes through the Habscheid Mill. If you plan to follow this route, check the current signage on site.
