Büdesheim combines architectural and religious history with a distinctive focus on nature: alongside St. Peter and Paul Church and numerous wayside crosses, local highlights include habitats on Hengscheid, orchids and birdwatching. Visitors can explore cultural landmarks and nature as separate areas of interest.

Church architecture and pilgrim signs

St. Peter and Paul is a Neo-Gothic, asymmetrical, two-aisled hall church. During its reconstruction in 1909, medieval building elements were incorporated and older components reused. The choir dates from around 1500; a new sacristy is probably dated to 1687. The building thus brings together several different eras.

Büdesheim has 22 wayside crosses, including several pilgrim crosses. The Blood Cross is a protected cultural monument: a late-Gothic niche cross dated 1542 and 1548. There is also a wayside cross on the road to Oos that is thought to be the oldest wayside cross in the former district of Prüm; it is estimated to date from the 13th or 14th century. The Heiligenhäuschen offers a different perspective: the pilgrim chapel stands on a hill above Büdesheim and affords a view across the Büdesheim valley.

Nature, habitats and wildlife watching

Hengscheid near Büdesheim covers about 2.3 hectares and includes orchid beech forest, juniper calcareous grassland and dry smooth oat-grass meadows. A total of 46 orchid species can also be observed in and around Büdesheim. These figures refer to different areas: Hengscheid is a specific site with three named habitats, while the orchid observations cover the area around Büdesheim.

A March walk to see spring snowflakes is one way to discover the flower in the Büdesheim area. If you are planning a visit specifically for this, check the latest dates in advance. Common bird sightings include cranes and white and black storks. Great and grey herons are regularly spotted around the biological wastewater treatment plant. Sightings may vary seasonally, so take the time of year into account if birdwatching is one of your interests.

Getting around locally

The B410 is an important route for getting around Büdesheim: it separates the northern and southern parts of the village, while also providing a convenient connection to regional centres and easing traffic within the village. There is a hiking car park on the B410 at the village exit towards Hillesheim. Check the current facilities on site before planning your hike around them.
