Rodershausen is located in the Southern Eifel Nature Park and combines a clear focus on hiking and nature excursions with historic traces of local architectural and religious history. When planning your trip, it is worth exploring two sides of the village: the gently rolling, wooded landscape and the wayside shrines, crosses and Catholic parish church of St. James.

Rolling Hills, Forest and Hiking Trails

The area around Rodershausen is characterised by gently rolling hills and forest. This landscape provides a setting for hikes and nature excursions, as well as more leisurely walks. Numerous hiking trails run through the Southern Eifel countryside around Rodershausen. Routes through the Southern Eifel Nature Park offer views across the landscape. Hiking and quieter walks are therefore different ways to experience the area.

The Rodershausen planning area lies on the Karlshausen plateau. This is part of the Western Eifel and is a rolling plateau at an elevation of over 500 metres. The Our Valley Special Area of Conservation (FFH area 6003-301), characterised by wooded valley slopes, borders the planning area to the northwest. These details refer to the planning area and not generally to the built-up village centre.

One specific route to help with planning is Circular Route No. 35, GemĂĽnd-Dauwelshausen: it runs along the Rodershausen planning area and is marked on the 2020 Southern Eifel Nature Park Experience Map. Check the current map before your hike rather than relying on the route as shown there. This lets you include the named trail in your plans without treating its earlier appearance on the map as current route information.

Wayside Shrines, Crosses and St. James

The two wayside shrines have different designs. The shrine on the main street is dated 1907 and contains a probably mass-produced PietĂ  in a gabled niche structure. Northwest of Rodershausen, on the road to Dauwelshausen, another wayside shrine is designed like a Station of the Cross. It contains an almost fully three-dimensional PietĂ  dated 1879. The different depictions also make these two historic landmarks interesting to compare.

Local architectural history also includes a round-arched wayside chapel from 1910 and the Catholic parish church of St. James. The church is a Gothic Revival hall church dating from 1898, attributed to the architect Knepper from Diekirch, Luxembourg. The cemetery contains a Baroque shaft cross from 1705 and a finial cross from 1688. Schneiderskreuz, a shaft cross, stands on SĂĽlmer StraĂźe. Together, these details show different forms of religious architecture and commemorative culture, from the chapel and parish church to wayside shrines and crosses.

Rodershausen’s carnival celebrations are also part of the local events calendar: the carnival association holds a Kappensitzung, a traditional costumed carnival gathering, every year. If you want to plan your stay around this event, check the date and programme for the relevant year, as both can vary.
