Neuerburg’s castle complex, viewpoints overlooking the town and the Neuer-Burg-Weg offer different focuses for a stay. Between the castle and the historic townscape, views of rooftops and the Enz Valley, and a climbing route, you can choose the themes that interest you most.

Castle and historic townscape

Neuerburg Castle is the largest surviving castle complex in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm district. The castle courtyard and castle chapel can be visited; the chapel was formerly a knights’ hall. As access may depend on the operation of the site, check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

The marketplace dates back to 1820 and is connected to narrow, winding lanes. Three chapels and numerous wayside shrines are located in the town center and its wooded outskirts. The combination of the marketplace, lanes and religious sites broadens the picture beyond the castle complex.

Views over the Enz Valley and trails

Neuerburg lies in the Enz Valley and is surrounded by wooded hills. From the Kleine and Große Kanzel viewpoints, you can see the town’s rooftops, the castle complex and the Enz Valley.

The Neuer-Burg-Weg crosses rocks and passes old sessile oaks on its way to viewpoints above the town. While the Kleine and Große Kanzel focus the view on the rooftops, castle complex and valley, the trail’s route over rocks and past old trees is also part of the experience.

Town park and via ferrata

The town park below the castle includes green spaces, a pond, two small Enz waterfalls and a children’s playground. Unlike the viewpoints, the focus here is not on views over the rooftops and valley, but on the combination of greenery, water and a play area. As park facilities may change, check the current situation in advance if needed.

Opened in 2026, the Neuerburg via ferrata is a 4.5-kilometer circular route that connects six climbing sections on rock faces and offers views over the town. Each climbing section can be bypassed, allowing hikers and climbers to use the same route.

The routes differ in their character: rocks and old sessile oaks shape the Neuer-Burg-Weg as it leads to viewpoints, while the 4.5-kilometer circular route and six climbing sections are among the defining features of the via ferrata.

Professional climbing equipment is required for the via ferrata. You can rent equipment from the Tourist Information Office at Marktplatz 3. Check the route information and safety requirements before setting out; if you plan to rent equipment, it is also advisable to check availability and the Tourist Information Office’s opening hours.
