Emmelbaum is located on the Arzfeld Plateau in the West Eifel. Circular hiking trails offer a clear way to explore the area for anyone who likes to combine a trip with walks through the countryside. The village also has a history that can be seen in its chapel and at several wayside crosses.
Circular Routes Around Emmelbaum
The R5 circular hiking trail is 3.9 kilometres long and starts at the community centre in Emmelbaum. It follows paved paths through the picturesque countryside. Check the local signage before setting out. This gives you both a named starting point and a specific route length to use as a guide.
Another option is circular route No. 6: It is around six kilometres long and leads from Emmelbaum via Engelsdorf and Froschseifen back to Emmelbaum. In a direct comparison of lengths, the R5 is shorter; route No. 6, however, passes through two other villages.
In addition to the individual routes, the local municipalities of Ammeldingen, Plascheid, Emmelbaum and Heilbach have jointly developed seven new circular hiking trails. Routes R1 to R7 are signposted. The Great Circular Route 1–7 is around 35 kilometres long, leads through places including Wallenbornerhof, Emmelbaum and Engelsdorf, and has around 850 metres of elevation gain. These figures make the routes significantly longer than the shorter ones mentioned above. When comparing hiking tours, you can use the distances, elevation gains and named places as a guide.
Chapel and Wayside Crosses
The chapel is also part of Emmelbaum’s local history. It was donated by a villager who had returned safely from captivity during the war. This story, passed down through the generations, connects the building with a specific personal event and offers a different perspective on the village from that of the circular routes.
A wayside cross stands at HauptstraĂźe 9 in Emmelbaum. Two more wayside crosses are located in the municipality of Emmelbaum: one at Sachsenhauserhof 1 and one at Windhof, also called Wallenbornerhof.
More Things to Explore in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm
For more travel ideas beyond Emmelbaum’s trails and local history, the wider Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm destination offers, among other things, attractions related to mining, fossils, military history and architectural heritage. These regional themes differ in content from Emmelbaum’s local hiking trails.
The Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine has a mining trail with numerous information boards about the area’s mining history. During one-hour guided tours, visitors learn about ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology. As opening information is seasonal, check the dates for your planned travel period before your trip.
The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex topics in palaeontology and the science of fossil life in a playful way. The Westwall Museum in Irrel is housed on three accessible floors of a bunker; its underground corridors and rooms contain a military history exhibition. The Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm thus offers different ways to explore natural science and history.
Another regional attraction is Rittersdorf Water Castle, which is around 700 years old. It has remained almost unchanged since it was built and offers a vivid picture of late medieval and early modern Renaissance residential culture. The castle also has a privately run restaurant serving fine country cuisine. Check whether the restaurant is open before your trip.
