The Steinkaulenberg Visitor Mine and the Bengelweg trail offer two different ways to explore the subjects of gemstones and industrial history in Idar-Oberstein. At the Historic Weiherschleife, a gemstone exhibition and pedal boating on the Kallwiesweiher add to the options. This gives you distinct themes to choose from when planning: geology, industrial history, exhibitions and an activity on the water.
Gemstones, Craftsmanship and Themed Trails
The gemstone tunnel at the Steinkaulenberg Visitor Mine is the only one in Europe open to visitors. The visitor mine also includes a gemstone camp and a geological educational trail. The tunnel, camp and trail each explore a different aspect of gemstones, with the trail focusing specifically on geology.
The Bengelweg trail takes a different approach: this short, accessible themed trail explores Oberstein’s metalworking and jewellery industry from the early 20th century to the present day. You can therefore set the geological themes of Steinkaulenberg alongside a historical perspective on a local industry.
The Historic Weiherschleife offers a gemstone exhibition and pedal boating on the Kallwiesweiher. The exhibition connects with the gemstone theme, while pedal boating offers a different, water-based experience. This gives you another way to shape your stay in Idar-Oberstein.

Culture and Nature in the Wider Birkenfeld Destination
In the wider Birkenfeld destination, the Birkenfeld State Museum has permanent exhibitions on the Celts and Romans, Birkenfeld and the House of Wittelsbach, ironworking in Birkenfeld district, a reconstructed classroom from around 1930, and the Oldenburg period. The 2.5-kilometre Götterallee between Schwollen and Leisel is also in the wider Birkenfeld destination. It features ten life-size, colourful statues of gods.
Part of Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park lies in the Birkenfeld collective municipality. Ranger-led and themed tours are offered in the national park. The wider Birkenfeld destination also has a range of trails focused on nature: the Obere Nahe Water Experience Trail in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach is one kilometre long and has four access points. It introduces visitors to the diversity of aquatic life in the Upper Nahe, including barbel and gudgeon, as well as waterbirds such as kingfishers and white-throated dippers, and dragonflies such as common demoiselles and river demoiselles.
The 1.6-kilometre National Park Island Trail around Börfink and Thranenweier uses information boards to explain rare and endangered arnica meadows, how they formed, how they are preserved and the diversity of species found there. At 1.6 kilometres, this trail is longer than the one-kilometre Water Experience Trail; its focus shifts from aquatic life to arnica meadows and their preservation.
