For a trip to Birkenfeld, you can choose to focus on nature, cultural history or cycling. Part of the HunsrĂĽck-Hochwald National Park lies within the Birkenfeld collective municipality. The options range from short nature trails to a regional museum and cycling routes with different itineraries. This lets you plan around the topics that interest you most, rather than trying to fit every destination into one itinerary.

Nature trails and landscapes around Birkenfeld

The Obere Nahe Water Experience Trail in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach is one kilometre long and has four access points. It focuses on the diversity of aquatic life in the Upper Nahe, including barbel and gudgeon. Waterbirds such as kingfishers and dippers, as well as dragonfly species such as the common demoiselle and river clubtail, are also among the trail’s topics. Its clearly defined route and focus on specific groups of animals make it a distinct nature stop to include in your travel plans.

The 1.6-kilometre National Park Island Tour around Börfink and Thranenweier offers a different perspective. Information boards cover the rare and endangered arnica meadows, how they formed and how they are preserved, as well as the biodiversity found there. The Ochsenbruch, a species-rich moor between Börfink and the Erbeskopf, gave the Börfink Ox Tour its name. The landscape and nature conservation therefore feature prominently at several points, each with its own connection to the route.

The “In the Land of Kites, Storks and Co.” nature trail has 18 stops around Niederhambach, Schmißberg and Rimsberg. Near Schmißberg, the trail includes an aviary with the stork pair Lotte and Bernie; it also provides information about the habitats of the red kite, black stork and other species. Wildlife enthusiasts will find different points of interest here than on the Water Experience Trail, which focuses on aquatic life, waterbirds and dragonflies.

Route lengths and outdoor art

The routes also differ considerably in length: the Water Experience Trail is one kilometre long, the National Park Island Tour is 1.6 kilometres, and the Götterallee is 2.5 kilometres. The Götterallee runs between the local municipalities of Schwollen and Leisel and features ten colourful, life-size statues of gods. Nature interpretation and public art therefore offer distinct themes side by side. The route lengths provide a concrete comparison of distance, but do not indicate walking times.

Museum and regional history

The Birkenfeld State Museum has permanent exhibitions on the Celts and Romans; Birkenfeld and the House of Wittelsbach; the iron industry in the district of Birkenfeld; a period classroom from around 1930; and the Oldenburg period. The exhibits span early historical periods, regional history, industry and everyday school life. A visit to the State Museum is recommended for the Birkenfeld section of the Nahe Cycle Route, making culture and cycling explicitly part of the same tour-planning option.

A historical point of interest lies on the B 269 at the turn-off to Oberhambach: a spa house once stood by the Sauerbrunnen springs and Petersquelle spring. Princes and kings from across Europe came to the Hunsrück to relax. This former significance is part of the area’s history and belongs to a distinct period, separate from today’s nature trails and cycling routes.

Cycling with different route connections

The RadLust-Schleife WasserTräume (Water Dreams Loop) starts in Birkenfeld, runs through Brücken and Abentheuer, passes a historic ironworks and then follows the edge of the national park along the old ore road towards the Saarland border. These stops connect the loop with local history and the landscape. A section of the Nahe Cycle Route offers a different orientation: it passes the Environmental Campus in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach before continuing to Birkenfeld. If you’re planning a trip around cycling, you can choose between the loop described here and this section, without treating them as one continuous route.
