The Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal gives a stay in Lonsheim a clear hiking focus: the premium circular hiking route passes through Lonsheim’s municipal area and leads through vineyards, meadows and woodland. Its viewpoints include the tower on the Hemm.
Access to the Hiwweltour
From Lonsheim, access to the Hiwweltour is via the car park next to the Catholic church. From there, the access path is marked in orange and signposted; after about 800 metres, it joins the main trail. When planning your stages, allow for the approach as a separate section before following the circular route. Trail markings and access arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.
Views and history on the Hemm
The observation tower on the Hemm stands in Lonsheim Forest and offers views across Lonsheim and the Rheinhessen hills. It was built in memory of the participants in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. At this viewpoint, the landscape views are paired with a specific historical connection.
A place to rest for hikers
A rest area with tables and benches invites hikers to linger. Facilities may change or be temporarily unavailable, so it is advisable to check shortly before your visit when planning your trip.
More themes in the wider Alzey-Worms destination
If you would like to include culture and landscapes in your travel plans as well as hiking, the wider Alzey-Worms destination offers other distinct themes.
The prehistoric and early historic exhibition at the Alzey Municipal Museum traces the cultural history of central Rheinhessen over more than 6,000 years. It spans the Neolithic, Bronze, Iron and Roman ages through to the Merovingian period. Another exhibition is devoted to the geology and palaeontology of the Mainz Basin. Minerals, particularly fossils, reveal how it developed over millions of years.
For a different perspective on the landscape, visit Petersberg between Gau-Odernheim and Bechtolsheim. The hill is 246 metres high, covered with vineyards, and offers far-reaching views across the Wonnegau and the surrounding hills.
There are also different hiking experiences in Alzey-Worms: the Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal leads through vineyards, meadows and woodland, while the Alzey Art & Culture Hiking Trail passes through vineyards and features 20 works of art and 22 vineyard huts. When choosing a route, you can compare a circular walk through the landscape with a trail that takes in works of art and vineyard huts.
Cyclists can explore more routes through the wider Alzey-Worms destination. The Selztal Cycle Route follows the Selz through the Rheinhessen hills. The Mühlen Cycle Route connects historic mills and picturesque wine villages—two different highlights to consider when choosing a ride. Conditions and signposting may change; check the latest information before setting off.
