Alzey reveals its history in different ways: at the museum in the former municipal hospital, among half-timbered houses and along the route of the medieval town fortifications. A walk through the city center, an art and culture trail, and the Wartbergbad swimming complex each offer their own highlights.

Museum: from regional history to Volker von Alzey

The Alzey City Museum was founded in 1906 and is located in the former municipal hospital in the city center. One section is devoted to Jewish history in the Alzey region. Another focuses on Volker von Alzey, the knightly minstrel in the Nibelungenlied. The stone hall houses important Roman stone monuments from the city. The museum thus brings together archaeological evidence, regional history and literary tradition.

The broader Alzey-Worms destination offers an even wider historical sweep through its museum exhibitions. The prehistory and early history exhibition traces the cultural development of inner Rheinhessen from the Neolithic through the Bronze, Iron and Roman Ages to the Merovingian period—a span of more than 6,000 years. The geology and paleontology exhibition focuses on the Mainz Basin; minerals, especially fossils, illustrate its development over millions of years.

Town Hall, Half-Timbered Houses and Fortifications

The former town hall stands at Fischmarkt. This Renaissance building, dating from 1586, was built using stones from Weidas Monastery. It houses a carillon featuring a figure of Volker von Alzey. If you would like to hear it, check the current performance times in advance. At Rossmarkt, the Rossmarkt Fountain and two decorative half-timbered houses shape the scene; the houses date from the 17th and early 18th centuries.

Remains of the medieval town wall can be seen at Hexenbleiche. The Metzgerturm is also located there and is probably the oldest tower in Alzey’s fortifications. The Wartbergturm is another historic landmark, serving as both a local symbol and an observation tower. After earlier destruction and reconstruction, the present tower was rebuilt in 1989.

City Walk and Art Trail

The Stadtspaziergang für Alle (City Walk for Everyone) takes you through the city center and passes twelve sights. Eight stops are fully accessible to wheelchair users. If accessibility is important for your plans, check the latest information before your trip.

The Alzey Art and Culture Trail offers a different focus: among the vines, the route passes 20 works of art and 22 vineyard huts. If you plan to visit, check the latest route information and access details in advance.

Another option: the Wartbergbad swimming complex

The Wartbergbad has four solar-heated pools for sports and recreation. These include a 25-meter swimming pool and a non-swimmer pool with a 70-meter water slide. As facilities and seasonal operating arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the latest conditions before visiting.

Alzey in the broader Alzey-Worms destination

Those who venture beyond the city can also explore regional destinations in the broader Alzey-Worms area. Petersberg, between Gau-Odernheim and Bechtolsheim, is 246 meters high, covered with vineyards and offers sweeping views of Wonnegau and the surrounding hills. The white trulli in and around Flonheim are vineyard huts built by Lombard migrant workers. These regional highlights complement Alzey’s local history but are not sights within the city itself.
