Kettenheim lies on the southern slope of the Wartberg in the valley of the Weidasser Bach. The municipal area covers 320 hectares, of which around 30 hectares are vineyards. Both its location between the slope and the stream valley and its vineyards are therefore important in understanding the area. The historic village centre and the WiesenmĂĽhle mill add further points of interest to this landscape.

Cycle Paths and Getting There

New cycle paths connect Kettenheim with Esselborn and Wahlheim. Another route is the signposted Mühlenradweg (Mill Cycle Path) from Alzey, which passes through Kettenheim’s municipal area. The routes to Esselborn and Wahlheim therefore connect the village with two places, while the Mühlenradweg, starting from Alzey, crosses the municipal area. By road, Kettenheim is connected to the B 271 federal highway and the A 61 and A 63 motorways.

Village Centre and Building History

The historic village centre brings together the town hall, Protestant church, redesigned square and adjoining buildings to create a cohesive village scene. The town hall is more than 300 years old and is considered one of the region’s finest half-timbered houses. The church’s history spans several construction phases: its choir tower is Romanesque and was raised in 1575. The new nave was added in 1816, using materials from Weidas Monastery.

The village’s history goes back further still: clay and bronze grave finds provide evidence of prehistoric settlement in Kettenheim. While the information about the town hall and church relates to specific buildings, the grave finds point to an earlier period.

The WiesenmĂĽhle Mill and Visitor Experiences

The Wiesenmühle mill was first mentioned in 1738. Its four-winged complex comprises rubble-stone and half-timbered buildings, and historic machinery has been preserved inside the mill. Visits with explanations of the machinery are available. A guided tour of the old building also offers a firsthand encounter with the milling trade. Please check in advance what visits and guided tours are available. The guesthouse also houses an exhibition on the mill’s history; please check before visiting whether it is open to the public.

Mathis' Wine Café has been open at the Wiesenmühle since 2022. Check its current opening status and hours before travelling. This allows you to consider the mill visit, exhibition and café as separate offerings, each with visiting conditions that you can confirm in advance.

Alzey-Worms: Regional History in a Broader Context

In the wider Alzey-Worms destination, the Alzey City Museum offers further historical and natural history topics. Its prehistory and early history exhibition traces the cultural development of inland Rheinhessen from the Neolithic through the Bronze, Iron and Roman periods to the Merovingian period. It covers a span of more than 6,000 years. A separate geology and palaeontology exhibition focuses on the Mainz Basin: minerals, particularly fossils, illustrate its development over millions of years.
