Freimersheim combines traces of early settlement and historic buildings with country lanes for walks and hikes. If you are planning a stay, you can make local history a focus while also setting aside time outdoors.

Local History from Early Times to the Middle Ages

Freimersheim was first mentioned on May 27, 766, in a donation to Lorsch Abbey. Settlement finds from the Hallstatt period were also uncovered at the village cemetery. This places archaeological traces from an early era alongside a written record of the village dating to the 8th century—two different perspectives on the history of Freimersheim.

The documented history of viticulture includes vineyards donated to Lorsch Abbey. A mill in Freimersheim was also donated to the abbey. References to vineyards and the mill add agriculture and the history of milling to the story of the village. The place name offers another historical clue: until the end of the 18th century, Freimersheim was called “Freimersheim hinter der Warte” to distinguish it from Framersheim.

St. Joseph and the Church’s Architectural History

The lower part of the Romanesque eastern choir tower of St. Joseph dates to the 9th century. The wall paintings on the eastern windows date to the second quarter of the 15th century. Saint Erasmus is depicted in the right-hand window reveal of the eastern window; the restored wall paintings probably also include a depiction of Saint Lawrence. The architectural and decorative history therefore spans the early construction of the tower through to late medieval painting.

Another phase of church construction followed in 1724, when a new Reformed church was built next to the old town hall. Freimersheim is thus home to different architectural histories and periods.

More Perspectives on the Wider Alzey-Worms Destination

The wider Alzey-Worms destination offers its own cultural and landscape history. In the town of Alzey, the prehistoric and early history exhibition at the Museum of the City of Alzey traces the cultural history of the inner Rheinhessen region from the Neolithic through the Bronze, Iron, and Roman periods to the Merovingian period. The period covered spans more than 6,000 years. The geology and paleontology exhibition in the same museum focuses on the Mainz Basin; minerals, especially fossils, make its development over millions of years easier to understand.

The Petersberg between Gau-Odernheim and Bechtolsheim also makes its mark on the landscape: it is 246 meters high, covered in vineyards, and offers far-reaching views of the Wonnegau and the surrounding hill country. Freimersheim’s local history and church architecture thus sit alongside distinct themes of the wider Alzey-Worms destination, including the museum exhibitions in Alzey and the wine-growing landscape of the Petersberg.
