Biebelnheim combines winegrowing with a rich history of pilgrimage and churches. The Way of St. James runs through the vineyards at Pilgerstein and continues uphill towards Petersberg. The Rosenberg and Pilgerstein vineyard sites also shape the village’s setting. Both local winegrowing and the history of the pilgrimage route therefore provide concrete points of reference when choosing a place to stay.
Pilgrimage history and churches in the village
A church in Biebelnheim is first mentioned in 1216. The pilgrims’ hospital existed from around 1350 to 1567. The Catholic church was later built on the former site of the hospital: it was constructed in 1737. Parts of the former pilgrims’ hospital chapel were incorporated into the church, including three wooden figures from the 14th century. The building’s history thus connects the site of the former hospital with preserved older furnishings.
The Protestant church acquired its present form through construction carried out between 1769 and 1770. During renovation in 1887, a gravestone for Margarethe von Biebelnheim was found, with an inscription dated 1589. The substantial stone wall beside the cemetery is also part of local history: it is thought to be a remnant of a former castle estate.
Vineyards, grape varieties and wine shop
The scale of winegrowing in Biebelnheim is also easy to appreciate: just over 200 hectares of vineyards are cultivated by nine wineries and a similar number of hobby winegrowers. The soils at Pilgerstein are particularly rich in lime and provide favourable conditions for Pinot varieties. At Pilgerstein, local winegrowing can be directly linked to the lime-rich soils.
Weingut Udo Diel offers wine tastings and wine for sale at its wine shop in the village and welcomes pilgrims travelling the Way of St. James. Check the current access and opening arrangements before visiting. The wine shop is therefore a separate destination for wine enthusiasts; it should not be confused with the accommodation and food offered at Landhaus Pilgerhof.
Accommodation and getting there
Landhaus Pilgerhof offers accommodation for pilgrims and meals directly on the Rheinhessen Pilgrimage Route. The inn offers rooms and a holiday apartment. If you are looking for accommodation connected with the pilgrimage route, its location is a clear local point of reference. Check availability separately before planning your stay.
If travelling by car, take exit 7 off the A63; from there, Biebelnheim is approximately two kilometres away. This distance is approximate. Check the signs and the current road connections before setting off. Bus route 660 connects Biebelnheim with Mainz and Alzey. As routes and services can change, it is advisable to check the current timetable.
The local offerings serve different purposes: Pilgerhof combines accommodation and meals with its location on the pilgrimage route, while the wine shop at Weingut Udo Diel offers wine tastings and wine for purchase. Together with the vineyards at Pilgerstein and the churches, these provide a clear picture of the features you can use to guide your choice of where to stay in Biebelnheim.
