Oberwinter can be explored through a range of interests: the village centre on the Rhine, two churches from different periods, a work of art at the harbour, and hiking and cycling routes all offer specific starting points for a stay. Getting there also has one particular feature: only regional trains stop at the station. So if you are considering Oberwinter as an overnight destination, you can first check your long-distance train connection and then plan which cultural attractions or excursions you would like to visit.

Getting here by train

Oberwinter is on the Cologne–Koblenz railway line. Only regional trains stop at the station; if you are travelling by ICE or IC, you will need to change in Bonn or Remagen. The onward journey from either station to Oberwinter takes only a few minutes. It is worth checking the timetable for your travel day so you can plan the connection from long-distance to regional rail.

Half-timbered houses and churches from different periods

The picturesque village centre lies on the Rhine, and well-maintained half-timbered houses make up much of its architecture. St. Laurentius Church was built in the 11th century as a Romanesque rural church. The Protestant Church is a Baroque court church, built in a backyard in 1723. Its exterior features a sandstone portal with floral reliefs, Greek columns, and angels. The two churches’ different periods and styles are clearly reflected in their architecture.

Hiking trails and cycling tours

The Rhine Castle Trail runs right through Oberwinter, from the nearby Rolandsbogen to the Mäuseturm near Bingen. The literary hiking trail L3, the “Humboldt Trail,” starts at a car park on the B9 right next to the marina and leads to the Friedrichsberg viewpoint, which looks out over Oberwinter. The routes have different points of reference: the Rhine Castle Trail has the endpoints mentioned above, while the L3 has its starting point and the viewpoint as its destination. If you plan to start from the car park on the B9, check the parking situation before your visit.

From Oberwinter, you can cycle along the Rhine to Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Remagen, or Sinzig. These four places offer several destination options along the river, rather than limiting the ride to just one. This lets you choose a specific destination for your cycling tour, while the L3 leads to a viewpoint overlooking Oberwinter.

Marina and art on the Rhine

Oberwinter Marina is located at Rhine kilometre 639. It offers moorings and anchorage for yachts passing through, as well as space for boats up to 34 metres long. The sculpture “Regenfänger” by artist Eberhard Bosslet stands on the harbour breakwater. Bosslet created the work in 2001 from equipment used in the construction industry.

The churches and the sculpture represent different periods: St. Laurentius dates from the 11th century, the Protestant Church was built in 1723, and “Regenfänger” was created in 2001. Oberwinter thus brings together Romanesque and Baroque architectural history with a later work of art. Combined with the hiking and cycling routes described above, these offer a range of ways to shape your stay.
