The coast of the Bay of Mecklenburg and the historic Molli narrow-gauge railway give Kühlungsborn two distinctive landmarks. The Baltic Sea resort lies roughly halfway between the Hanseatic cities of Rostock and Wismar. The Molli connects Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan on the unusual track gauge of 900 millimeters. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider which places and activities you want to shape your stay: the station and pier in Kühlungsborn Ost, the City Forest between the two centers, or the hiking and cultural offerings.

Two Centers and the City Forest

The 133-hectare City Forest lies between Kühlungsborn West and Kühlungsborn Ost. The two town centers were formerly called Arendsee and Brunshaupten. Their locations and historic names help you understand the town’s layout without reducing Kühlungsborn to a single focal point.

Kühlungsborn Ost station is a starting point for a walk along Strandstraße, which leads directly to the pier. The Molli is also useful for getting your bearings: it runs 365 days a year and connects the town with Bad Doberan. Check the timetable before your trip if you plan to include the train in your itinerary.

Pier, Harbor and Steam Train Ambience

At 240 meters long, the pier is one of the most distinctive structures on the Baltic Sea coast. The boat harbor offers a different kind of appeal: built in 2004, it provides recreational boaters and fishermen with direct access to the Baltic Sea and space for more than 400 boats. The two locations thus represent different sides of Kühlungsborn—the pier as a structure on the beach, and the harbor as a point of access to the Baltic Sea for recreational boaters and fishermen.

GLEIS 2 – Das Mollirestaurant is located in the distinctive red-brick station building in Kühlungsborn Ost. Guests are offered modern cuisine in a nostalgic steam train setting. This brings the Molli and a dining option together in one building at the station.

Hiking, Cycling and Hands-On Activities

Kühlungsborn has numerous trails and guided tours for hiking. For cyclists, the European long-distance cycle route E9 runs through the town. The underwater nature trail is aimed at Baltic Sea enthusiasts and complements land-based activities with an experience connected to the Baltic Sea. To get an overview, it is worth sorting the various activities according to your own interests rather than treating them as a single excursion program.

Kühlungsborn’s high ropes course has seven courses. Töpferei Laetitia offers courses in traditional pottery for adults and children. A course on amber teaches participants how to hand-polish natural amber, which can be made into items such as necklaces, key rings or worry stones. Materials washed ashore, including driftwood, stones, sea glass, shells, amber and feathers, are also turned into works of art. Washed-up litter can also be reused. These activities have different focuses: physical activity at the high ropes course, and crafts and creative work at the pottery studio.

History and Townscape

At around 800 years old, St. John’s Church is the oldest building in Kühlungsborn. The town’s facades also display an ornamental tradition dating back to the 19th century. The BT11-type border tower of the 6th Border Company stands right on the beach promenade and houses a museum. Those interested in history can discover a range of historic features in the townscape.

Events are also part of what the town has to offer: Kühlungsborn hosts 300 of its own events each year, ranging from children’s programs to major events. If you want to attend a particular event, check the dates for your travel period. Guests can get information about their vacation year-round at the Tourist Information office in Haus des Gastes, Ostseeallee 19.

A Look at the Surrounding Area

Between Kühlungsborn and Kägsdorf lies the unspoiled Riedensee, one of the last coastal lakes of its kind on the southern Baltic Sea coast. It adds a natural landmark in the surrounding area to the town’s other points of reference, including the City Forest, pier and harbor.
