Evershagen tells the story of building history on several scales: from its development as an experimental district to the visual arts program of the district center and individual listed historic buildings. Ongoing district walks explore local architectural and art history. The S-Bahn and bus connections also provide practical guidance when planning a stay.

From Experimental District to Center

Evershagen was developed from the late 1960s as an experimental district and served as a model for later satellite housing estates in Rostock. The district center was added in the following years: it was built between 1971 and 1977 under the direction of Peter Baumbach and included an elaborate visual arts program. This reveals two distinct aspects of the development: the urban planning ambitions of the new district and the artistic design of its center.

Those interested in architectural history can connect this story of the district’s origins with individual buildings and designs. The heritage list dated April 7, 2026, includes the terraced building at Bertolt-Brecht-Straße 8–10, together with the surrounding open spaces, as a listed historic building. Three other listed gable designs are named “Air,” “Sun,” and “Earth”: “Air” is at Fridtjof-Nansen-Straße 5a, “Sun” at Knud-Rasmussen-Straße 12, and “Earth” at Strindbergstraße 1. The different names and addresses give each design its own designation; what they have in common is their listed heritage status.

Schutow, District Walks, and Art

The former Schutow exhibition grounds are also part of the Evershagen district. The Bauwesen Pavilion was built there in 1966 as a hyperbolic paraboloid shell structure by Ulrich MĂĽther, based on an architectural design by Erich Kaufmann. The pavilion is another historical reference point where a specific building form and the contributions of two architects can be distinguished.

The ongoing district walks focus on local architectural and art history. Another point of interest is Ronald Paris’s mural “On Human Responsibility” at the “Am Scharren” shopping center: discussions about possibly recreating it at its original location resumed in connection with the mural. This describes the status of the discussions, not a recreation that has already taken place.

The annual “Picnic in the Urban Green” takes place at the park by the Mühlenteich pond on Messestraße. The event is planned as an informative, active, and relaxing afternoon for the whole family. If you are planning a trip for a specific date, check the date of that year’s event; its annual format does not mean that a specific event date is set for your trip.

Plan Your Journey by Bus and S-Bahn

Rostock-Evershagen station is on S-Bahn line S1 between Rostock Central Station and WarnemĂĽnde. From there, a direct public transport connection runs toward the city center and the seaside resort of WarnemĂĽnde. RSAG bus line 38 serves the following stops in Evershagen: Thomas-Morus-StraĂźe, Theodor-Storm-StraĂźe, Evershagen SĂĽd, and S Evershagen. This gives you both an S-Bahn connection and several named bus stops to help you find your way; it does not provide specific journey times. The bus timetable is valid from January 5, 2026. As timetables can change, check the times before traveling.

Rostock as a Historical Destination in Its Own Right

Rostock itself has a history stretching back more than 800 years and is one of the Baltic coast’s historic Hanseatic cities. A walk through Rostock’s historic center passes, among other places, through Universitätsplatz, by the Convent of the Holy Cross and along Kröpeliner Straße, and on to Neuer Markt and St. Mary’s Church. It offers insights into architecture, urban development, and Hanseatic traditions. While Evershagen’s architectural history focuses on the development of an experimental district and its visual arts program, this walk explores Rostock’s historic center.
