Marienhagen combines local history with a themed hiking destination: the village church, formerly known as St. Mary’s, can be visited at any time, and a Planet Trail also starts in the village. This gives you a choice between two distinct highlights for your stay: a local cultural attraction and a hike with an astronomical theme.
The Church and Historic Traces
The church was probably built in the first half of the 13th century. The key is available from the church sexton, the church council, or the parish office. It’s best to arrange to collect the key with one of these contacts before your visit.
Near Marienhagen is the site of the Frankenkirche. It is associated with an early hilltop church from the period of Christianization, although this historical classification is partly uncertain. You can enter and visit the wooded site, which offers views of the surrounding region. Please observe the rules for access to private property.
The Planet Trail to Basdorf
The trail starts in Marienhagen, passes through Vöhl, and continues to Basdorf; it is around 6 km long. Planet stations along the route explain the solar system, and there are also regional viewpoints. The route is considered easy. As trail conditions may change, it’s a good idea to check the latest conditions before setting out.
More destinations in the wider Vöhl travel destination
In the wider Vöhl travel destination, the former synagogue is a simple half-timbered building in the center of Vöhl. It was built in 1827 and dedicated in 1829. Today, it serves as a venue for concerts, lectures, and commemorative events. If you’re visiting specifically for an event, check the relevant program.
Another highlight in the wider Vöhl travel destination is the bat nature trail in Vöhl-Asel. It features interactive stations and clearly signposted information. A bat exhibition is housed in an old transformer station, and infrared cameras provide live views into a maternity roost. As the technical equipment may not always be available, if you’re particularly interested in the camera footage, we recommend checking before your visit.
The Eder Bridge near Alt-Asel is also part of the wider Vöhl travel destination. It is 60 meters long, has four arches, and is considered the best-preserved structure in the old Eder valley. As the water level of Lake Edersee drops, it is the first structure to emerge; when it becomes visible therefore depends on the water level.
For hiking, the municipality of Vöhl lists almost 50 signposted trails, in addition to the long-distance Kellerwaldsteig and Urwaldsteig trails. This means that the specific themed route from Marienhagen is complemented by further hiking options in the wider Vöhl travel destination.
