When the water level of Lake Edersee falls, the 60-metre-long Eder Bridge with its four arches is the first structure to emerge near Alt-Asel. It is considered the best-preserved structure in the old Eder Valley. Here, a historic bridge and its visibility depending on the water level come together in one specific place.
Out and About
In addition to the Kellerwaldsteig and Urwaldsteig long-distance hiking trails, the municipality of Vöhl offers almost 50 signposted hiking trails. The two named trails connect the hiking options with long-distance routes; alongside them, the almost 50 trails offer a wide choice of signposted routes throughout the municipality. For a different way to get around when choosing between hiking and cycling, a four-star quality cycle route runs through Vöhl’s municipal area from Ederbringhausen along the Eder, passing green meadows and fields. You can plan first according to your preferred activity: on foot along signposted hiking trails or by bike on the quality route described here.
Bats in Vöhl-Asel
The bat nature trail in Vöhl-Asel combines interactive stations with clearly signposted information. A bat exhibition is housed in an old transformer station; infrared cameras offer live views into a maternity roost. Evening observations are also possible: bats can be watched hunting with the help of a bat detector and night-vision equipment. Advance registration is required for the hunting observation. The stations, exhibition and evening observations offer different insights into bats; advance registration is specifically part of planning an evening observation.
Building History in Vöhl
The former Vöhl synagogue is a simple half-timbered building in the centre of Vöhl. It was built in 1827 and inaugurated in 1829, and now serves as a venue for concerts, lectures and commemorative events. The year of construction and the year of inauguration should be clearly distinguished; the building also has a cultural use. Hessenstein Castle offers a different historical perspective: it was built in the 14th century on the medieval trade route from Frankfurt to Hamburg and became the first youth hostel in Hesse in 1922. Different timelines therefore sit side by side: the dated construction and event use of the former synagogue, and the castle’s medieval origins and later history as a youth hostel.
Swimming in Marienhagen
Marienhagen outdoor pool adds a swimming option to the area’s attractions. Its heated pool measures 10 × 25 metres. The areas for non-swimmers and swimmers are separate; there is also a dedicated swimming lane. The pool’s dimensions and layout give this swimming option its own clearly defined profile alongside the hiking trails, cycle route and historic buildings.
In the wider destination of Waldeck-Frankenberg
Waldeck-Frankenberg also offers a broader setting for nature and hiking. Since 2011, the ancient beech forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park have been part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. The 66-kilometre Urwaldsteig Edersee can be hiked in eight stages or as part of a three-day ranger-led hike; each stage of the ranger-led hike is listed as around 22 kilometres. The formats differ in structure: eight stages on the one hand, and the three-day ranger-led hike, with each stage around 22 kilometres, on the other. This makes it easy to compare the regional hiking options by format.
