Wallenstein combines striking castle ruins with two hiking trails that differ in length and character. The Schlossbrunnenweg is 4.8 kilometres long, while the Lochbachpfad is 8.3 kilometres. One trail focuses on the historic castle well, the castle ruins and scenic views; the other leads through the Lochbach Gorge along narrow paths, walkways and bridges. The castle is also the destination of a point-to-point cycling tour and the venue for the annual knight tournaments. This gives you several distinct options when planning your trip: hiking, historic architecture and a specific event date.
Two Hiking Trails with Distinct Character
The 4.8-kilometre Schlossbrunnenweg is a certified premium walking trail. It is an easy circular route around Wallenstein Castle and begins below the castle in the Knüll Nature Park. Mostly natural paths lead to the historic castle well and the ruins of Wallenstein Castle; along the way, there are also views of the Knüll Mountains and Wallenstein.
The 8.3-kilometre Lochbachpfad begins at the Wallenstein hiking car park in Knüllwald-Wallenstein. In the Lochbach Gorge, the route follows narrow paths, numerous walkways and bridges through a narrow ravine alongside a small natural stream.
Choosing between the two trails is not just a matter of distance: the Schlossbrunnenweg stands out for its easy circular route and scenic views, while the Lochbachpfad is notable for its passage through the gorge. The trail descriptions therefore show two different ways to experience the landscape around Wallenstein.
Castle Ruins and Landscape
The ruins of Wallenstein Castle lie in the Knüllwald on a spur below Mount Babloh. Outside the castle walls, the terrain drops steeply on three sides. Large sections of the strong shield wall of the almost-square inner castle remain. The description thus brings together two perspectives: the spur and steep slopes define the castle’s position in the landscape, while the shield wall is a striking feature of the inner castle. Visitors interested in historic sites can therefore explore both the topography and the architecture.
Cycling Route, Knight Tournaments and Natural Swimming Pool
Wallenstein Castle is the destination of the Efze-Vital Cycle Route point-to-point tour. Since 2000, the Burg Wallenstein e. V. village association has held annual knight tournaments with a medieval market at the castle. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the date for the relevant year. There is also a natural swimming pool below the castle ruins. If swimming is part of your plans, check the current conditions of use in advance.
In the Wider Knüllwald Destination
In the wider Knüllwald destination, the Beisetal information and forest education trail has 14 stations with information about nature, culture and the landscape of the Beisetal valley. A water playground with a water wheel and water pump is located directly beside a ford on the trail. The route therefore features both information stations and a dedicated water-play area. Seasonal conditions may affect access.
Another trail in the wider Knüllwald destination is the “Around the Rommelsberg” Fable Trail. It starts in the village centre of Rengshausen and follows meadows and fields before entering the forest. The difference between these two Knüllwald trails is clear: the Beisetal trail features its 14 stations and water playground, while the Fable Trail is characterised by its route from open land into the forest.
