At the Beisetal information and forest nature trail, nature, culture and landscape come together: 14 stations explore the Beisetal, while the trail runs between Niederbeisheim and Rengshausen alongside the stream and through the forest. At a ford, there is a water playground with a waterwheel and water pump. This brings together things to learn along the way and a place to stop by the water. Seasonal conditions may affect use of the playground.

Compare forest trails and landscapes

The “Around Rommelsberg” Fable Trail offers a different focus. It starts in the center of Rengshausen and leads through meadows and fields into the forest. While the Beisetal trail follows the stream and passes through the forest, this trail leads from the village center through open countryside to the forest. When planning which trails to take, you can consider these different landscape impressions. Check for temporary route notices before setting out.

The Hutewald Trail near Knüllwald-Rengshausen focuses on old, gnarled trees. The trail is located in Knüll Nature Park, offering another connection with nature alongside the stream, forest and open fields. The three trails have distinct themes: the Beisetal trail combines information stations with a route beside the water, the Fable Trail leads from the village center through meadows and fields into the forest, and the Hutewald Trail draws attention to old trees.

Castle ruins, a church and seasonal facilities

The Wallenstein castle ruins are located on a mountain spur below the Babloh in Knüllwald. In Knüllwald-Reddingshausen, there is a small half-timbered church that serves as a cycling church directly on the Efzetal Cycle Route R17. It is open in summer; if you are planning a ride on the route, this seasonal opening is a helpful consideration.

Wallenstein natural swimming pool has a non-swimmer pool and a children’s pool, as well as a slide and water play equipment. As it is a seasonal facility, check for current notices before a possible visit. This way, your planning takes account of both the amenities described and their seasonal availability.

Choose accommodation based on your travel interests

When looking for accommodation in Knüllwald, you can first decide which themes you want your trip to focus on: the trails along the Beisetal, the Fable Trail and the Hutewald Trail offer different landscape impressions; the castle ruins and cycling church add cultural points of interest. Shape the rest of your plans around the places and activities you actually want to include. For seasonal facilities, be sure to check current notices.

More to explore in Schwalm-Eder District

The wider Schwalm-Eder District includes upland landscapes around Knüll, Kellerwald and Habichtswald. Cultural attractions in other places across the district have their own distinct focus. The Malerstübchen Museum in Willingshausen explores 19th- and 20th-century art history and displays paintings featuring Schwalm folk costume. The exhibition also includes traditional Schwalm handicrafts, whitework embroidery, and knitting and spinning. Expert-led tours include talks about the artists’ colony and its artists, Schwalm customs and handicrafts.

At the Schwalm Museum in Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain, a reconstructed pottery workshop displays ceramic objects and pottery commonly used in the region. The museum also houses a large model of Ziegenhain Water Fortress. It shows the fortress as it was in 1761, after it was shelled during the Seven Years’ War. Art, craft traditions and fortress history thus offer different ways to explore culture in Schwalm-Eder District.

A permanent exhibition in the tithe barn at the Breitenau Memorial in Guxhagen commemorates events of the Nazi era. Its educational program includes guided tours, walks, talks and readings. For nature enthusiasts, the Steinkammergrabrunde near Fritzlar-Lohne is another option in the district: this easy circular route is 4.90 kilometers long and is designated Nature Park Circular Route L1.

For a longer route, the Schwalm Cycle Route runs for around 100 kilometers to the Schwalm’s confluence with the Eder, just before Felsberg in Schwalm-Eder District. It runs mainly on paved or surfaced paths through river landscapes of meadows, fields, villages and half-timbered towns. Felsberg-Gensungen and Schwalmstadt-Treysa railway connections are listed as ways to reach the cycle route; check the current timetable before travelling. The Schlossbrunnenweg passes a spring pond on the way to the Schlossbrunnen, which once supplied Wallenstein Castle with fresh water.
