Reichenberg Castle stands prominently on a ridge and dominates the view of Reichelsheim. This distinctive landmark is also part of the 12.1 km Sagenweg Wildweibchenstein circular trail. The route also passes the ruins of Rodenstein, the Falling Brook and the Wildweibchenstein, crosses the Buchwald forest and returns to the parking lot at Reichenberg School. This means that several clearly named places and a stretch through the forest are highlights of one trail. If you choose a hike based on its stops, you can take in the castle, ruins, brook and forest as distinct features along the way.

Three hiking trails compared

The three trails described differ in length and theme. At 12.1 km, the Sagenweg is the shortest; the Panoramaweg zwischen Erz und Stein R8 is 14.7 km long, and the Gersprenztal-Runde R7 is 15.4 km. The R7 offers long-distance views as far as Neunkirchner Höhe (604 m), follows part of the Alemannenweg and returns to Reichelsheim via Beerfurth. The former mining region around Rohrbach and Erzbach is the focus of the R8. The trail offers a glimpse into an old mine tunnel, giving it a different emphasis from the R7’s long-distance views or the stops along the Sagenweg. The lengths allow for a direct numerical comparison; the destinations mentioned help you choose between the routes based on their respective themes.

Route information and museum

The Reichelsheim municipal tourist information office has produced a separate leaflet for each of the Odenwald Club-certified quality circular hiking trails R1, R6, R7 and R8. Check in advance whether the leaflet you want is available. It is also worth checking current local route information before setting out on a hike.

For a visit to the Reichelsheim Odenwald Regional Museum, the opening day is especially important: it is open on the second Sunday of each month from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Confirm the hours before your visit, as opening information may change. This lets you plan your museum visit around its set monthly opening day, while the hiking trails offer another way to get to know Reichelsheim.

More cultural and nature topics in the Odenwald

The wider Odenwald destination also offers distinct themes to consider when planning your trip. Breuberg Castle has a history spanning more than 850 years and is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in southern Germany. The Breuberg Museum is located in the castle.

Another regional highlight is the Felsenmeer rock field in Lautertal. It was formed by geological processes that began more than 340 million years ago. Remains of Roman stoneworking from the 3rd and 4th centuries give the Felsenmeer historical significance. The Felsenmeer Information Center provides information about its formation, Roman stoneworking, the Siegfried Spring and the BergstraĂźe-Odenwald Nature Park. Guided tours and talks can also be booked through the center, for example on geological development, legends, and the wildlife and habitat of the Felsberg. Check availability if you plan to take part in one of these activities.

The Villa Haselburg near Hummetroth is also part of the Odenwald’s Roman history: it is an excavated and reconstructed villa rustica from the 2nd century AD. Together with the Roman traces at the Felsenmeer, it offers another glimpse into the region’s past.
