In the Odenwald, history extends far beyond the visible structures: the rocks also tell stories spanning vast periods of time. The crystalline Odenwald includes deep-seated rocks such as gabbro, diorite, granodiorite and granite, as well as metamorphic rocks. The latter provide evidence of a continent-continent collision that took place 400 to 320 million years ago. This geological perspective can be linked to later traces of human activity—especially vividly at places where natural and cultural history meet.

Felsenmeer: Natural History and Roman Stoneworking

The Felsenmeer in Lautertal brings together two widely separated periods of time. The geological processes that formed it began more than 340 million years ago. Numerous remains of Roman stoneworking from the 3rd and 4th centuries also give the Felsenmeer historical significance. Those interested in both can explore the geological formation and the later working of the stone in one place.

The Felsenmeer Information Center provides information about the formation of the Felsenmeer, Roman stoneworking, Siegfried’s Spring and the Bergstraße-Odenwald Geo-Nature Park. You can book guided tours and talks through the center. Topics range from geological development and stoneworking to legends, wildlife and the habitat of the Felsberg. Before making plans, check which tours or talks are available to book. The information center also includes a bistro serving regional dishes.

Castles and Roman Traces

Breuberg Castle has a history spanning more than 850 years and is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in southern Germany. The Breuberg Museum is located inside the castle. The adventure trail leads uphill to the castle from the historic market square in Neustadt and features viewing platforms and a large slide. A visit to the castle therefore focuses both on its long history and on a route with several stops.

The Roman Villa Haselburg near Hummetroth also tells of the past: it is an excavated and reconstructed villa rustica dating from the 2nd century AD. The Odenwald Limes is another Roman relic in the Odenwald. These sites and remains offer different perspectives—from a Roman complex and traces of stoneworking to a Limes mentioned as part of the region’s history.

Exploring the Odenwald

Four nature-oriented camps are available in the Odenwald for trekking tours. Day stages connect the camps; individual, weekend and multi-day tours are available. This allows you to plan according to different tour lengths, without requiring all stages to fit the same timeframe. Booking arrangements and seasonal conditions may change, so it is advisable to check them before planning.

Neckarsteinach lies in the southern Odenwald and is surrounded by four medieval castles. A 5-kilometer car-free riverside promenade, with signposted hiking and cycling trails, offers another way to explore the area along the river. In the summer months, boats operated by the Weisse Flotte also run regularly between Heidelberg and Neckarsteinach. These are different details to bear in mind when planning: the promenade is five kilometers long, while the seasonal boat service connects the two places mentioned. Check the current timetable before planning a trip.

Regional Dishes and Products

Odenwald inns serve, among other things, green spelt and game dishes; the selection varies from one establishment to another. Farm shops and vending machines for regional products offer local produce for outdoor cooking. If you want to cook for yourself while traveling, they provide another way to include regional products in your trip plans. Availability and opening arrangements may vary.
