Weichersbach combines hiking trails with landscape and cultural themes that can be given different levels of emphasis when planning a trip. Within the village, the described routes range from the 5.3 km Green Trail to the approximately 18 km Three Castles Trail. The Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R2 also passes through Sinntal-Weichersbach: its 203 km route runs here between Sinntal-Mottgers and Sinntal-Oberzell.

Hiking Trails with Different Themes

The 6 km Weichersbach Circular Hiking Trail is designed as a nature and history trail. It lies in the northern part of the village and starts in the village center on SchulwaldstraĂźe. The Green Trail offers a different focus: this 5.3 km trail in the western part of Weichersbach is an agricultural educational trail and also starts in the village center. The stated distances help you weigh up the desired route length; the themes and starting points also differ.

For a longer loop, the Three Castles Trail starts at Schwarzenfels Castle. The approximately 18 km circular route leads through Weichersbach and the surrounding countryside; its named stops include the Steckelsburg ruins and the Ulrich von Hutten Trail. This makes it possible to compare a village loop with a nature and history focus with a longer route passing several named cultural sites. Check current trail conditions and signage before setting out.

Landscape and Traces of History

A circular hiking trail runs along the foot of Stoppelsberg. The designated nature reserve is characterized by dense deciduous forest; the striking Schlangenritz rock formation is also located there. The same circular trail continues past the former KeilmĂĽhle mill. Paper was produced here for more than 400 years, until production ended after a boiler fire in 1983. The mill thus marks a chapter of local industrial history that has come to a close.

The landscape is also characterized by its habitats: the 126.41-hectare “Magerrasen bei Weichersbach und weitere Flächen” FFH site comprises extensive, extensively managed nutrient-poor grasslands and mesic meadows on shell limestone. Another cultural landmark is the largely preserved, functioning historic watermill, the Weichersbacher Biemühle. The completely renovated vaulted cellar, dating from the 14th century, is believed to have been the first dwelling and therefore the origin of a settlement in Weichersbach.

Crafts, Village Life and Events

In the agricultural heritage village of Weichersbach, a geological hike through the Weichersbach-Mottgers Graben is offered. Those interested in traditional crafts can arrange an introduction to the art of blacksmithing with the village blacksmith. Advance arrangements are important for this introduction.

Annual events include the traditional kermesse and the Backfischfest at the sports ground. The tent kermesse has been established since 2010; the Backfischfest takes place once a year. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these festivals, check the current event dates before your trip. Services are held in Weichersbach Church on Sundays and public holidays, alternating with Mottgers and Schwarzenfels. Service times rotate between 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00; check these details before visiting as well.

More Cultural and Nature Highlights in Sinntal

The wider destination of Sinntal offers other attractions that differ from those in Weichersbach. Near Sinntal-Altengronau is the Old Jewish Cemetery, with more than 1,400 identified gravestones; the first graves were laid out in 1680. The cemetery has been preserved in its original condition. Visits are subject to restrictions based on the religious calendar, so check the latest information in advance.

The fritillary meadows are also part of the wider destination of Sinntal: the Sinnwiesen Nature Reserve extends from Sinntal-Altengronau to Sinntal-Jossa and includes these meadows. The annual fritillary festival is celebrated in Sinntal-Altengronau at the end of April; free guided tours offer the chance to explore the meadows. Flowering is seasonal and weather-dependent, and dates and event arrangements may vary. Alongside Weichersbach’s trails and historic landmarks, Sinntal therefore offers other reasons to visit, specifically located in other parts of the destination.
