Chess flower meadows, historical landmarks and paths through open landscapes and wooded slopes give Sinntal many different sides. The options range from a circular trail of just under six kilometres near Jossa to a longer circular route between Sterbfritz and Weiperz. The natural swimming pool, the source of the Kinzig and cultural sites also each add their own distinctive touches.

Chess Flowers and Protected Meadows

The Sinnwiesen Nature Reserve stretches from Sinntal-Altengronau to Sinntal-Jossa and includes the chess flower meadows. You can enjoy the flowers from various cycling and hiking routes, for example along the paved cycle and footpath between Altengronau and Jossa. Flowering is seasonal and weather-dependent. The annual chess flower festival is held in Altengronau at the end of April; free guided tours take visitors through the chess flower meadows. Dates and arrangements may vary from year to year.

Church History and a Historic Cemetery

In Sinntal-Altengronau, the Church of the Ascension preserves relics from a church that is over 500 years old. These include a sacrament niche made from a section of the old church wall, which was incorporated into the new building. The Old Jewish Cemetery near Altengronau has been preserved in its original condition. More than 1,400 tombstones have been identified there; the first graves date from 1680. Visits are subject to restrictions based on the religious calendar. So check the latest access information in advance.

Circular Routes of Different Lengths

The Spessartfährte Quellwinkel Kinzig is just under 14 kilometres long and follows a circular route from Sinntal-Sterbfritz to Sinntal-Weiperz. It passes through two nature reserves. Along the way, open landscapes give way to wooded slopes; from the ridges around the source of the Kinzig, views extend towards the Rhön, Spessart and Vogelsberg. Numerous orchids grow right beside the route in the Stephanskuppe and Weiperzberg nature reserves. For a shorter circular walk, try the Spessartspur Jossa-Sinn-Blick, which is just under six kilometres long. It starts at the sports ground in Sinntal-Jossa and passes a shelter with a barbecue area above Jossa, a state-recognised health resort. The stated distances make it easy to compare the two routes by length; trail conditions may change.

The Source of the Kinzig, Beavers and a Natural Swimming Pool

At the source area of the Kinzig near Sinntal-Sterbfritz, tables and benches offer a place to rest while enjoying views over orchards. The site also connects to the Three Castles Trail from Sterbfritz to Schlüchtern, which links Schwarzenfels Castle, the ruins of Steckelberg Castle and Brandenstein Castle. The Christmas market at Schwarzenfels Castle is held every year on the first weekend of Advent; specific dates and details may vary.

Wooden benches and tables are available at Willingsgrundweiher near Sinntal-Breunings. With patience and a little luck, you may be able to spot the beavers, which are active at dusk and at night, as well as their lodges. The Schlüchtern Forestry Office offers guided tours on the beaver information trail on request. Altengronau Natural Swimming Pool has grassy and wooden sunbathing areas, as well as reclining loungers. The water area covers 680 square metres; the facilities listed also include a sandstone diving rock, a slide hill, a water play area for children, a waterfall, a playground and a table tennis table. Check the seasonal operating conditions before visiting.

Sinntal also has a high point: the highest mountain in the Main-Kinzig district, at 585 metres, is located here. Alongside the protected meadows and trails, the ridges and viewpoints offer further themes to consider when planning your trip.
