Marktredwitz lies in the valley of the small river Kössein, between the hills of the Fichtelgebirge and the Steinwald and just a few kilometres from the Czech border. The town is a starting point for excursions, hikes and cycling tours in the Fichtelgebirge, the Steinwald, the Upper Palatinate Forest and neighbouring Bohemia. This means you can plan both routes in the surrounding area and destinations in town.

Getting Here and Finding Your Way

Marktredwitz has a direct connection to the A 93 and is an important railway hub on the Nuremberg–Eger and Munich–Hof routes. From the main railway station, you can reach the town centre on foot in just a few minutes. This makes it easy to combine a train journey with a short walk into the town centre; if you arrive by car, the direct motorway connection is a useful reference point for planning.

Auenpark, Views and Tours

At Marktredwitzer Auenpark, you can enjoy a picnic with a view of Lake Auensee or take a stroll along flower beds planted with flowers. Another viewpoint is the “Überschaubar”, an observation platform on the boiler house of the former Benker textile factory in Auenpark. From there, the view stretches across Lake Auensee to the neighbouring MAKBAD natural swimming pool. The park offers several ways to spend time outdoors, including picnics, walks and a dedicated viewpoint.

For a hike, the Goldsteig starts at the Drei-Bögen-Brücke in Auenpark; its first stage runs from Marktredwitz to Friedenfels. The long-distance cycle routes “Donau-Naab-Saale” and “Main-Eger-Elbe” pass through Marktredwitz. The options are distinct: the Goldsteig has a named starting point and stage destination, while the two long-distance cycle routes pass through the town. During the summer months, for example from April to October, the Tourist Information rents out high-quality CUBE e-mountain bikes and e-touring bikes. Check availability before your trip.

Egerland Culture in Marktredwitz

The Egerland Cultural Centre is dedicated to preserving Egerland traditions. It houses the Egerland Museum, the Egerland Art Gallery, the museum café, the town library and the office of the Euregio Egrensis Working Group Bavaria e. V. The Egerland Museum’s permanent exhibition presents life, history and culture in the Egerland region. The art gallery features works by artists with strong ties to their homeland in the Egerland. In the cultural centre’s outdoor grounds, the Egerland Fountain depicts an Egerland peasant wedding on four levels.

The Marktredwitz Nativity Trail offers another glimpse into the local nativity scene tradition. It takes place in the town and its districts: the “Kripperer” open their homes to visitors, share anecdotes and often display Marktredwitz landscape nativity scenes that fill an entire room. The Marktredwitz nativity tradition has been included in Bavaria’s State Directory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. If you plan to visit the trail, check the seasonal dates in advance.
