In Wunsiedel, cultural history, performing arts and a striking rocky landscape appeal to a range of travel interests. The Fichtelgebirge Museum and historic town walk offer a cultural focus; the rock labyrinth and cycling routes provide further ideas for planning your trip.
Culture in Wunsiedel
The Fichtelgebirge Museum in Wunsiedel is Bavaria’s largest regional museum. Since 1964, it has been housed in nine buildings around the medieval Spitalhof in the centre of Wunsiedel; the complex includes 3,100 square metres of exhibition space. The museum and town walk offer different ways to explore the town’s history: the walk takes you through the neoclassical old town, including the Koppetentor, the oversized “coffee mill” and numerous fountains. You can explore it on your own or with trained tour guides.
The church ruins, the oldest building in Wunsiedel, are located in Bürgerpark Katharinenberg. The church is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria and became an important pilgrimage site in the 14th century. Its preserved sacred atmosphere lends special charm to church and cultural events.
Rocky Landscape and Open-Air Theatre
The Luisenburg Rock Labyrinth in Wunsiedel is characterised by huge boulders, caves and ravines. The “Luisenburg Rock Labyrinth Wunsiedel” nature reserve covers 101 hectares; the nature reserve regulation came into force on 1 February 2026.
The Luisenburg Festival presents contemporary theatre as an open-air event on a rocky stage. It takes place annually from May to September and is intended for all age groups and sections of the population. If you plan to attend a performance, check the specific dates for your travel period.
Cycling Routes, Bus and Other Places of Interest
The Bavarian section of the Eger Cycle Route is around 55 kilometres long and follows the Eger through Bad Weißenstadt, Röslau, Marktleuthen, Thierstein, Selb, Hohenberg a.d.E. and Schirnding. On the Czech side, the route continues via Pomezí nad Ohří and Cheb, where it connects to Czech long-distance cycle route No. 6, the Cyklostezka Ohře. The roughly 55 kilometres refer to the Bavarian section, not the entire cross-border route. Before setting out, check local notices for temporary closures or detours.
Another cycling-related place in Wunsiedel is Bahnhofspark: the cross-border Brückenradweg cycle route runs through it along its entire length. For bus journeys, route 1703 connects Marktredwitz, Bad Alexandersbad, Wunsiedel, Tröstau, Nagel, Ebnath, Brand in der Oberpfalz, Mehlmeisel and Fichtelberg. Routes and timetables may change; check the latest information for your travel period.
Mining and geology are also represented as distinct themes. The “Kleiner Johannes” Old Mine in Arzberg is dedicated to both. The Häuselloh show quarry in Selb focuses on the extraction and processing of granite; guided tours are available on request. Arrange a tour date with the provider.
