The parish church of St. Martin stands on the ridge above the Mindel Valley and is a marker of Unteregg’s early settlement. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the village itself, other parts of the municipality and nearby destinations outside Unteregg.
The Church and Historic Village Centre
The Catholic parish church of St. Martin at Kirchstraße 10 is a medieval tufa-stone building dating from the 15th century. The unplastered tufa-stone ashlar building comprises a hall, a narrower choir and a north tower with a pointed spire. Dated 1477, the church was remodelled around 1720/30. The building thus reveals both its medieval origins and later alterations.
The rectory at Kirchstraße 11 also shapes the historic village centre: it is a two-storey building with a hipped roof, dating from around 1780, with a moulded wooden eaves cornice. Together with the church, the historic rectory courtyard and the Gasthaus Adler form a harmonious ensemble. The buildings showcase different architectural styles without requiring an extensive sightseeing itinerary.
Village Culture and Finding Accommodation
Local culture includes the Unteregg-Oberegg brass band, with almost 50 active musicians, which plays an important role in Unteregg’s cultural life. The Maypole Friends also represent a long-standing tradition: they are known for imaginatively decorated maypoles, which have often received top awards. The church, music and maypole culture each offer a different glimpse into village life.
The Gasthaus Goldener Adler is at Kirchstraße 14. Check before travelling whether it is currently open. Ferien- und Seminarhof Preißinger is at Obere Hauptstraße 55; confirm its current availability directly. Both addresses can help you look for accommodation in Unteregg, but they do not provide information about facilities or prices.
Trails in the Municipality
The “Around the Drei-Länder-Stein” hiking trail runs for 16 kilometres through woodland and open countryside. Explanatory signs stand beside the three-sided boundary marker. The Drei-Länder-Stein itself is in the forest by the lower Schwarzenbach stream, in the Warmisried/Bayersried area: a historic red-marble boundary stone dating from 1791.
The Crescentia Pilgrimage Trail offers a different kind of route. It passes through Oberegg, not the central village of Unteregg, and is an approximately 90-kilometre circular route from Kaufbeuren via Mindelheim and Ottobeuren, returning to its starting point. The 16-kilometre hiking trail and the approximately 90-kilometre pilgrimage route therefore differ considerably in both length and itinerary.
There are also water foot-baths in Eßmühle and Rappen within the municipality of Unteregg. Check local conditions before visiting.
Nearby Destinations Outside Unteregg
The Katzbrui Mill is outside Unteregg and is a traditional grain mill dating from the 17th century. For the walk there, the municipality recommends starting in Unteregg. Alternatively, you can drive to the car park and walk the final 100 metres.
The Teufelsküche geological site is also outside Unteregg, in the valley of the eastern Günz. Large, haphazardly piled blocks of compacted glacial gravel define the site. Teufelsküche is designated a natural monument; visitors should stay on the paths. In the nearby historic old town of Mindelheim, the town hall is another landmark: it was remodelled in the historicist style in 1897.
The Wider Travel Region of the Unterallgäu
Throughout the Unterallgäu district, cycling and hiking trails are marked consistently; the district is also home to the Glückswege trails. The Unterallgäu is served by the A7 and A96 motorways. An extensive road network, rail connections and Allgäu Airport in Memmingerberg provide additional access to the region.
